The Department of Library and Information Studies invites applications and nominations for an Assistant Professor position with expertise in school libraries and in a secondary related area, including instructional technology, public library youth services, youth literature, reading, information literacy of youth, or information needs and use of youth. This nine-month, tenure track position becomes effective August 1, 2018. Salary is commensurate with qualifications. Summer teaching is normally available as an option.
Responsibilities: Teaching online and blended modalities, research, and service in the following areas: school library programs, instructional technology, literacy, and children and young adult services. In addition to teaching, responsibilities include advising students and candidates for completion of MLIS degree and school library licensure, community engagement and service to the Department, School, and University.
The candidate should have expertise in school libraries and working knowledge of the broad application of technologies in the K-12 school setting. Preference will be given to applicants with working experience in the K-12 school setting and to those with an established research agenda.
The Department has a MLIS enrollment of over 300 students in the Greensboro campus and online programs. The MLIS is accredited by ALA and the School Library Program is nationally reviewed and recognized by the American Association of School Librarians (AASL) and the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).
Founded in 1891, The University of North Carolina at Greensboro is classified by The Carnegie Foundation as a comprehensive doctoral, research university with "high research activity" and in the community engagement classification under Curricular Engagement and Outreach and Partnerships. The University has a diverse student body, with an enrollment of more than 19,000 students, including 3,600 graduate students, and is located in the city of Greensboro in the Triad area of North Carolina. UNCG is one of four doctoral-granting institutions of the seventeen-campus University system and places strong emphasis on effective teaching as well as research and service to the community.
Earned doctorate by August 1, 2018 in library and information studies, education, or closely related field, a Master's of Library and Information Studies (MLIS) from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited program, demonstrated potential for research and publication, demonstrated teaching excellence, and appropriate experience in school library programs.
Expertise in directing 21st century school libraries and supporting the role of school librarian as teacher, leader, and technology expert, and knowledge of state licensure/certification requirements are essential to this position as is a commitment to distance education and flexibility in a variety of delivery modes.
