Provide guidance and counseling to students in matters related to academic goals, choice of curriculum, course load, study habits, and course scheduling. Complete degree checks for individual students and student groups as needed. Assist with student orientation, whether freshman or transfer students. Develops and/or completes college/school documents such as classroom assignments, plans of study, curriculum guides, graduation forms, and study abroad documentation. Serve as a resource for the university's student database including coordinating input, generating reports, training users, and recommending updates. Verify/report student and course information which may include (but not limited to) class rolls, grades, academic certification of athletes/veterans, statistical analyses, and/or forced drops. Evaluate and/or update student records in order to post grades, do graduation checks, monitor student progress, and advise students on an appropriate course of study. May assist with recruitment of prospective students.
Department Specific Essential Job Functions
Counsels students regarding academic endeavors. Provides guidance to students in selection of a major. Completes degree audits for individual students and student groups as needed. Acts as a resource person for academic information and decision-making strategies. Acts as a liaison between the University academic departments, UCO students and prospective students. Gives presentations to First-Year Experience courses. Articulates course work as needed. Plans and implements new student programs. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Requires a bachelor's degree in Counseling, Education, or related field. Knowledge in the higher education attainment process, particularly the requirements and general value of education. Must be proficient in basic mathematics. Some experience in admissions and enrollment process.
Master's degree. Prior academic advising/counseling experience. Familiarity with admission and enrollment process at the University of Central Oklahoma or in an institution of higher education setting and its undergraduate degree programs. Willingness to work within the academic framework of the University and to serve on faculty and student committees.
Knowledgeable in the higher education attainment process, particularly the requirements and general value of education. Demonstration of a warm and caring professional attitude and creative counseling techniques. Ability to communicate effectively with department chairpersons and/or deans regarding degree program requirements. Ability to work well under pressure.
