The Department of Philosophy at California State University Fresno is seeking applications for a tenure-track position in Religious Studies at the Assistant Professor rank, beginning Fall 2018. We are seeking specialization in either Islamic or Jewish traditions with teaching competence in the other, along with Christian traditions. The successful candidate will have proficiency in the language of their area of research. The position emphasizes contributions to undergraduate teaching, not only for majors but also in general education courses, along with conducting research and engaging in service. Opportunities to teach in the Peace and Conflict Studies Program and to engage with local community interreligious groups are available. Regular responsibilities include research, publication, and other scholarly public activities, as well as advising students and engaging in service at all levels of the university. A candidate may be asked to teach and develop courses in distance learning or with service-learning component.

The department has teaching needs in lower and upper division GE courses, including Exploring Religious Meaning, Comparative Religion, and Religion and the Margin; and in specialized courses, including Islam, Judaism, and Philosophy of Religion. It is also expected that the candidate will develop new courses relevant to their areas of expertise.

The Department of Philosophy in the College of Arts and Humanities at California State University, Fresno State offers a B.A. degree with concentrations in Philosophy, Religious Studies, or Pre-Law. The department is committed to diverse philosophical and humanistic approaches and traditions. It also hosts the University's interdisciplinary Ethics Center and the Peace and Conflict Studies Program. Required Education: An earned doctorate (Ph.D.) in Religious Studies or a closely related discipline from an accredited U.S. institution (or international equivalent) is required by 7/1/2018.

Required Experience: Evidence of excellence in teaching skills and interest in teaching in a broad undergraduate curriculum to both majors and non-majors. A successful candidate will show evidence of success in research. A publication history commensurate with years of experience. Expertise in, and commitment to, interactions among traditions or texts in more than one religious tradition. Demonstrated commitment to work effectively with faculty, staff, and students from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Evidence of interest in collaborative interactions among different religions and sincere commitment to engagement among scholars and practitioners.
  • Experience and enthusiasm for teaching students of diverse ethnic backgrounds and/or first generation college students.
  • A preferred candidate would have experience, expertise, and interest in some contemporary issues such as: nonviolence/violence, the role of religion in education, gender, interreligious dialogue, and religion in politics and public life.
