Responsibilities:

The Postdoctoral Research Associate will play a key role in a multi-institution project (University of Washington, Caltech) enabling next-generation biologically-based wastewater treatment processes. Research collaborators have identified novel microbial consortia capable of simultaneously improving effectiveness and decreasing cost of municipal wastewater treatment, however the key to implementation of such strategies at scale lies in development of real-time feedback control strategies to maintain stable reactor conditions that promote the target microbial communities in the face of fluctuating inputs and environmental conditions. The Postdoctoral Research Associate will work with partners to design an appropriate multi-analyte sensing strategy, install instrumentation for real-time monitoring in lab-scale reactors at the University of Washington, and develop algorithms to optimally control reactor conditions based on real-time data streams. The successful candidate will also assists the supervisor in the interpretation and publication of results and grants. Maintains the laboratory and may exercise functional supervision over supporting research staff. Primary responsibility is ensuring that the research is complete. The appointment generally does not extend beyond two years.
