The University of Toledo invites applications and nominations for the position of Dean, Judith Herb College of Education (JHCOE). UT is classified by the Carnegie Foundation as Doctoral Universities: Higher Research Activity. Founded in 1872 in downtown Toledo as the Toledo University of Arts and Trades, the University became a member of the state university system in 1967. Transformed into the University of Toledo (UT) located in Toledo, Ohio, it is comprised of 13 colleges (Arts and Letters, Business and Innovation, Education, Engineering, Graduate Studies, Health and Human Services, Honors, Law, Medicine and Life Sciences, Natural Sciences and Mathematics, Nursing, Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences and University College). UT’s enrollment of over 20,000 students (fall 2016) draws from across the U.S. and nearly 80 countries. The university has a vibrant campus life with over 350 student organizations. Founded as a Teachers College in 1916, a generous gift from the Herb family in 2006 resulted in what is now known as the Judith Herb College of Education. JHCOE is located on the Main Campus in Gillham Hall where 52 faculty represent a blend of scholars and distinguished professionals who embody the diversity and excellence of the College. JHCOE’s enrollment in fall 2016 was approximately 1,200.

The Judith Herb College of Education mission is to prepare educators, instructional leaders, and scholars who can construct and sustain effective learning environments through the development and practice of innovative educational theories and pedagogical approaches. To accomplish its vision of shaping the future of education for an ever-changing world, the College has three areas of focus: Curriculum and Instruction; Early Childhood, Higher Education and Special Education; and Educational Foundations and Leadership which respectively offer five undergraduate degrees with 21 areas of concentration, four master’s degrees with 31 areas of concentration, two Education Specialist degrees, three doctoral degrees with 12 areas of concentration, and four certification programs. The Dean is the chief academic, fiscal, and administrative officer of the Judith Herb College of Education, and reports directly to the Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs. The Dean provides leadership to the faculty and staff in all matters relating to curriculum and program development; accreditation, assessment and evaluation; recruitment and retention of faculty, staff and students; research, scholarship, grant-seeking and fundraising. The Dean will actively pursue collaborations with corporations and other organizations, as well as pursue fundraising for the College in concert with the Office of Institutional Advancement.
