Student Health Services (SHS) at The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) is searching for a college health Adult or Family Nurse Practitioner to expand our current provider staff.  This is a permanent, benefits-eligible, full-time, 10-month position working 43 weeks between the 3rd week in August and the 3rd week in June with NO CALL or weekend hours.  Working within the professional parameters of certification and licensure, and in accordance with the policies & procedures of SHS and the collaborative agreement with SHS’s physician, responsibilities include providing inclusive, non-judgmental health care to TCNJ students, with an emphasis on health education, wellness and disease prevention (i.e., vaccinations, travel health, LGBTQ issues, sexual health, contraception, and sexually transmitted diseases), and working collaboratively with colleagues in SHS and external partnering units.  Strong clinical skills and the ability to effectively manage a busy appointment schedule are required. The successful candidate will have a demonstrated commitment to working effectively from a multicultural orientation with our diverse college population and be proficient at providing both direct medical assessment and care and campus outreach presentations and consultation to students, parents, faculty, and college personnel on issues related to student health and wellness.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master of Science in Nursing from an accredited school

  • Current certification by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) or the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) as a Family or Adult Nurse Practitioner

  • Current New Jersey licensure as Advanced Practice Nurse with prescriptive authority

  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) CPR/AED certification for healthcare professionals

  • One year of pertinent, primary healthcare experience working as a nurse practitioner, ideally in the college/university setting

  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills

  • Demonstrated clinical skills to provide acute and preventive healthcare

Key Roles & Responsibilities:

  • Provides direct primary health care to students including physical, developmental and psychosocial well-being.

  • Obtains patient history and performs assessment via observation, interview and examination.

  • Orders, performs and interprets laboratory tests and diagnostic studies and implements appropriate health care response.

  • Provides travel health consultations to students traveling or studying abroad.

  • Performs phlebotomy and CLIA-waived point-of-care laboratory tests.

  • Performs and interprets tuberculosis skin tests.

  • Administers routine and travel vaccinations.

  • Determines presence of social risk behaviors when obtaining health histories and responds with appropriate education, screening and/or referrals.

  • Documents all care and contacts with student in electronic health record.

  • Consults with collaborating physician as needed.

  • Implements follow-up contact and care as needed.

  • Provides illness or injury specific patient education to patients at time of medical appointment.

  • Collaborates with other campus resources to provide holistic care and support.

  • Provides continuity of care to patients by coordinating health care needs through intervention, counseling and referral on and off campus.

  • Participates in Quality Assurance, Quality Improvement chart review as required by collaborative physician agreement

  • Recognizes and respects multicultural influences on health care decisions and individualizes plan of care accordingly.

  • Maintains strict confidentiality of medical records.

  • Maintains computer proficiency with electronic health record

  • Supervises student nurse practitioners and coordinate learning experiences.

  • Provides caring, respectful, non-judgmental healthcare.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Minimum of one year primary healthcare experience working as a nurse practitioner in the college/university setting

  • Experience with electronic health records (EHR), preferably Medicat®.

  • Proficient in phlebotomy and experience with performing point-of-care laboratory tests

  • Computer proficiency to include Word, Excel, Power Point, and Publisher

  • Strong public speaking skills on topics of health and wellness

  • Able to effectively and professional interact with adolescents and young adults from diverse and underrepresented populations including, but not limited to, African-Americans, Asian-Americans, Hispanic-Americans, multi-racial, LGBTQ, and those from lower socio-economic backgrounds.

The College offers a generous benefits package that includes health, dental, vision and prescription plans, as well as pension, paid leave time and tuition savings programs. This position has the state title of Advanced Practice Nurse 10Mo. It is included for membership in the Communication Workers of America (CWA) bargaining unit. The starting salary for this position is P28, $80,948.00.
