Schedule Information: Primarily evenings

Hours Per Week: 29

Benefits:  Prorated Sick & Vacation; Holiday Pay; 2 Harper Tuition Waivers per semester

Work Conditions: Work is primarily indoor and sedentary in nature.

Duties of Position:  

In addition to recruitment and retention throughout the AED sequence of classes, provides academic guidance to AED students as they transition to College and Career.  Works with AED team to register, and place students according to goals and abilities. Provides program information,  individual assessment and referral to other departments at Harper College or to community agencies.

Registration and Assessment

Assists in the recruitment and retention of AED students.

Participates in the AED general and on-going student registration and placement processes.

Administers tests as needed.

Provides initial appropriate individual student guidance; helping students start thinking about career goal, Refers to  or College  support services or community agencies, as needed

Instructional Enhancement Services

Serves as an advocate for students by providing education on the rights of immigrants and encouraging students to follow through with referrals to immigrant advocacy organizations. 

Serves as a resource to implement techniques for serving the cultural needs of nonnative students.

Arranges educational lectures and presentations on issues pertinent to the Adult Education  student population.

Student Guidance

Directs student follow-up activities including contacting students who have or have not completed the program within the fiscal year.

Assists in the organization of  recognition activities for  AED student accomplishments and student contributions, including Adult Education National Honor Society and the HSE Graduation ceremony

Serves as liaison between the AED Department and other Harper departments as well as community agencies.  Maintains files of community agencies and serves as a resource for student referrals.

Assists students in locating and using educational, career, and vocational information monitoring the distribution of scholarships and awards.

Conducts interviews and refers students for testing of and monitoring of special needs, such as learning disabilities, behavioral disorders, visual impairments, or physical disabilities.

Conducts student surveys to determine academic and vocational interests. 

Works with students needing academic advising and assistance with schedule changes. Serves on committees and task forces in the college and community to provide for improved student services and increased networking in the community.

Performs related duties as assigned

Educational Requirements:   Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, Social Work, Education or related area plus fluency in Spanish.

Experience Requirements:   Minimum two years’ experience in Education, Advising or Social Work
