Reporting to the Associate Director of Communications Technologies, The department of Enterprise Infrastructure seeks a motivated, proactive, Senior Network Engineer. The Senior network Engineer will be responsible for the network switching infrastructure and services architecture within Network and Technical Services. This includes core, distribution and edge switch configurations and architecture. He or she will work directly with the other network administration staff responsible for the day-to- day operation of the network environments as well as represent Network and Technical Services on division and institution wide projects

Qualifications

Requires a Bachelor’s degree and 5 years related experience in installation, troubleshooting and maintenance of commercial or enterprise campus networks, associated equipment. This includes demonstrating the following: (NOTE: Applicants who do not possess the required education may substitute required experience on a year-for-year basis.)

  • Knowledge of and experience with the TCP/IP networking protocols, including IP addressing schemes, subnet configuration, and practical protocol operation.

  • Knowledge of and experience with installing, maintaining, and troubleshooting fiber-optic network interfaces, and fiber-optic cable distribution systems.

  • Knowledge of and experience with any of the following technologies: Cisco routers, Palo Alto firewalls, Extreme Networks Layer 3 switches, or Aruba Networks wireless systems.

  • Possession of a valid State driver’s license in good standing required.

  • Demonstrated ability to provide high-quality customer service in a manner appropriate for an institution catering to a variety of constituents.

  • Demonstrated effectiveness communicating with individuals at varying management and skill levels (supervisors, co-workers and customers) via both personal interaction and e-mail.

  • Demonstrated effectiveness in establishing and maintaining positive and cooperative working relationships within a multi-departmental institution.

  • Demonstrated ability to work in an independent manner. Work shall at all times be completed with attention to detail in planning and execution.

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate project requirements to managers, contractors, engineers, and end-users and apply critical thinking skills to assess these requirements within an established standards framework.

  • Demonstrated ability to provide high-quality technical documentation reflecting the details of all phases of work.

  • Demonstrated ability to learn the specifics of a campus-wide communications distribution system and apply that knowledge effectively in all facets and phases of assigned work.

  • Knowledgeable in the general operation and application of means, methods and standards related to installation and troubleshooting wireless networks at both the network edge and wireless client; these general operating and standards applications include the 802.11 standards and RF propagation theory, as they relate to design, installation and operation.

  • Knowledgeable and skilled in working with commercial/enterprise network equipment, including edge and core switching equipment.

  • Experienced in assessing and troubleshooting network connectivity problems.

  • Knowledge of and experience assigning, configuring and modifying Layer 2 and Layer 3 network parameters.

  • Knowledge and experience in working with VLANS, including assessing their configuration and purpose as applicable to troubleshooting, restoring services, or deploying network equipment.

  • Knowledge and experience with advanced networking protocols such as OSPF, LISP, VRRP and MLAG.

This position has the state title of Professional Services Specialist 1. It is included for membership in the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) bargaining unit. The starting salary for this position is U27, step 1, $70,232.25. Salary is competitive and commensurate with education and experience.
