Job Description Summary:
The Director of Student Life, Development, and Leadership reports to the Associate Dean of Student Affairs and is responsible for overall strategic management of Student Life services and programs within a diverse, complex and changing campus.. This position supports campus life, student engagement, student wellness, and student development and leadership through a variety of programs and services that promotes an experience for student success and retention. The Director oversees the experiential and co-curricular learning opportunities within Student Life. The Director provides vision and leadership for development, oversight, and assessment of the college's student life programs including but not limited to: signature campus activities and events, student government, student clubs and organizations, Greek Life, Orientation, and Leadership Development program. The Director enhances a student living/learning environment that focuses on student identity and development while supporting student involvement as ways of creating connections for student success.
Director supervises and provides oversight to services/programs under the direction of the Associate Director of Student Life, and the Coordinator of Student Life Operations including: Club and Organization Program and Recognition Process, Advisor and Training, Campus Activities Board, Orientation, Leadership Development, Cultural Programming, Portfolios, Budget, and other programs and initiatives.

Specific Duties:

•Provide strategic leadership, vision and management that creates a dynamic Student Life program that supports La Verne’sand departmental mission, and that is integrated within the educational experience of 2800+ undergraduates. Provide services/programs for students that create opportunities for growth and development, engagement, and leadership development.

•Provide support and supervision, mentoring, training, and ongoing professional development for professional staff and student leaders in the integration and application of outcome-based planning and assessment within Student Life.

•Develop, plan, and track yearly programmatic goals/action plans based on divisional and Council for the Advancement of Standards in Higher Education (CAS) self-assessment guides for Student Life programs.

•Direct, design, and implement a quality, diverse and inclusive, competency-based student leadership development model that has various components and developmental goals aimed at: personal growth and development, cultural competency, social justice and activism, academic success, community engagement, professional and career development. Create strategies and approaches that provide access and opportunities for engagement on a variety of levels. Opportunities to engage in retreats, workshops, seminars, one on one consultation, guest speakers, forums, socials, and unlimited learning opportunities for students, advisors, and other community members. Create a leadership theory to practice model that bridges student life, 80 plus club and organizations, ASULV, Greek Life, Landis Scholars, and others within a holistic and co-curricular experience based on learning outcomes and multi-level partnerships across campus. A learning model that provides diverse involvement opportunities, knowledge, instills leadership skills inclusive of critical thinking, vision, and promotes respect, dignity, diverse and inclusive communities, which promotes intercultural learning and practice within the campus and beyond.

•Recruit, train, and utilize staff and faculty in various aspects of a leadership program that includes: LEAD Advisory Committee (with members from throughout the University working on an inclusive model for leaders across the campus), workshop and retreat facilitators, and mandatory advisor training.

•Design and teach the General Studies 232 - Leadership and Practice I required for Landis Leadership Scholars (application/selection process) in Fall (theory) and Spring (practice). Class is a credit (1) or non-credit (0) unit class.

•Plan, design, and manage a leadership retreat or conference for campus student leaders. Research new initiative of a Leadership Certificate Program for advanced leaders.

•Serve as the administrative advisor for the Associated Students of the University of La Verne (ASULV) as outlined in their constitution and bylaws.. This position is responsible for overseeing the day to day operation of ASULV for continuity of mission, goals and objectives. Provide leadership development and training to the executive board, and Senate. Oversee the elections process and selection of members through resignations and disciplinary issues. Serve as administrative advisor as outlined in their constitution and bylaws. Serve as the financial advisor for the ASULV $950,000 budget. Collaborate with the ASULV faculty advisor for the best interest of the organizations. Consult on financial matters such as the club funding process.

•Serve as the administrative advisor for the Greek Life system. Oversee all aspects of fraternity and sorority Fall and Spring recruitment/membership intake, retention, and training for Greek Life programs including Divine Nine organizations. Design and offer instruction on current and best practices in Greek Life administration to student, faculty and staff in support of the University mission. Demonstrated knowledge of hazing and best practices in hazing prevention. Demonstrated experience with extension and/or expansion. Serve as an unbiased resource for all Greek Organizations. Provide programming and assistance to all Greek organizations. Set and administer guidelines pertaining to Greek Life. Conduct grade checks on all members of the Greek Life community.

•Oversee and assist in coordinating campus-wide committees responsible for the design, planning, and execution of over 200 signature and general events throughout the year such as: Orientation, Homecoming, Welcome Week, Club Fairs, Cultural/Affinity Months, and Service/Community Engagement programs. These and other events/programs are internal within Student Life, or present collaborative opportunities with other departments such as: Multicultural Affairs, Community and Civic Engagement, Alumni Relations, Academic Advising and Retention, First Generation and Peer Mentoring, Chief Diversity Office, Interfaith Programs, and others.

•Create partnership and collaborative interdepartmental programs and services within the ULV community in support of retention and building comprehensive and engaging learning environments that benefit the campus community, especially students. Design opportunities to work and engage students with faculty and staff in co-curricular initiatives.

•Develops, implements and coordinates campus-wide educational efforts aimed at the prevention of sexual violence and other forms of sex and/or gender-based discrimination on campus. Assist in coordinating divisional programming and training, professional development opportunities, and development of Title IX resources and publications.

•Manage all programming budgets in accordance with the guidelines set forth by the university.

•Develop yearly reports, goals and objectives, divisional strategic plans, evaluations in accordance with guidelines set forth through the Dean;s Office and the University.

•Member of the campus CARE Team. Offer students in crisis the care, support, resource referral, and advisement necessary to stay in college and graduate.

•Other Duties as Assigned

•Serve as a Campus Security Authority (CSA), under the Clery Act, is designated to receive and report criminal incidents to the Department of Campus Safety so that they may be included and published in the University’s Annual Security Report.



Minimum Qualifications:

•5 years - Relevant and progressive experience in Student Affairs or related field with demonstrated knowledge in student life, student governance, student development and theory, and leadership programs.
•5 years + - Program planning and event management experience.
•3 years - Supervisory experience as a Student Life/Activities (or related area) at the associate or director’s level.
•Post graduate experience working with Greek Life and Divine Nine, and other cultural Greek organizations.
•Direct experience working collaboratively with academic and service units across divisional lines (silos) to ensure holistic and forward-thinking initiatives in support of student success.
•Demonstrated experience in advising, advocacy, mentoring, and counseling knowledge and skills in working effectively with students and groups.
•Demonstrated knowledge and ability to develop learning outcomes and models for assessment of programs and services (yearly and program reviews).


This position requires obtaining and reviewing motor vehicle records (MVRs) prior to or during consideration of application as well as ongoing review through California’s Electronic Pull Notice (EPN) Program. This position is contingent upon meeting and maintaining acceptable and satisfactory driver’s driving records.

Preferred Qualifications:
•5 years - Progressive experience in co-curricular programming and signature events.
•3-5 years. - Advanced and proven administrative knowledge and skills at the Director’s level in program development and management, supervision, learning outcomes, assessment, strategic planning, leadership training, and budget/finance management.
•2-3 years. - Developed and executed a quality, diverse and inclusive, competency-based leadership development program for students with different needs and levels.
•3-5 years - Teach and train students, mentors, advisors, club/organization membership, and staff on a variety of leadership topics including: theory, vision, skill development, conflict management, communication and team building, and other topics that are a basis of a quality leadership and development program.
•2-4 years - Developing new programs and initiatives.
•3-5 years - A progressive and proven ability to engage and speak effectively to small and large (500+) audiences.
•3-5 years - Progressive leadership and service within a professional association related to professional field such as: NASPA, NACA, ACUI, NODA, etc.
•2-3 years - Strong technical skills and ability to train staff in implementing new and emerging technologies.
•2-3 years - Professional experience and understanding working in a Hispanic Serving Institution.
•2-4 years - Advocacy, advising, mentoring, and counseling knowledge, skills, and experience working with students, and managing difficult and challenging situations that require thoughtful and effective communication.
•2-3 years - Knowledge and experience working with CAS Standards (self-assessment guides) for major areas within Student Life such as: student governance, Greek Life, Leadership Development, and other programs.
