Job Description Summary:

It is the academic mission of the George Washington University's School of Business (GWSB) to be a preeminent business school recognized for scholarly research, teaching excellence, innovative curricula and focused on the responsible management of organizations in the global environment. In support of this mission, the GWSB Office of Undergraduate Programs is searching for a Senior Academic Advisor. This individual is a key contributor to the success of the Undergraduate Advising Office.

This position reports to the Assistant Director (Curriculum) for Undergraduate Academic Advising within the Office of Undergraduate Programs. This position does not have direct reports (Staff) but will supervise two undergraduate student mentors who serve as classroom teaching assistants.

The primary responsibility for the Senior Academic Advisor, is to guide student development in the classroom, through academic advising and co-curricular programs and opportunities. This position provides guidance to students on their course of study from orientation through graduation. This position educates students on University policies and procedures, goal setting, academic planning, and course selection. The Senior Academic Advisor provides referrals to other resources on campus, as appropriate.

The Senior Academic Advisor teaches two or more sections of BADM 1001, 1002, or 1003 (the First Year Development Program and/or Transfer Development Course); a weekly course required of all GWSB undergraduate students. The instructor is responsible for the students meeting the learning objectives of the course as established by the Executive Director of Undergraduate Programs.

The Senior Academic Advisor serves on committees and/or fulfill programming responsibilities such as Colonial Inauguration (orientation), GW Professional Academic Advising Network, Freshman Day of Service, GWSB Commencement Committee, Admissions Panels, or other committees or assignments as requested by the Associate Dean or Executive Director.

Performs other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.

Minimum Qualifications:

Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor's degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus 2 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Master's degree or higher in a relevant area of study. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Additional Required Licenses/Certifications/Posting Specific Minimum Qualifications: Preferred Qualifications:

• The ideal candidate will have (2) years of experience in an academic setting to include one year of experience disseminating academic information and reviewing/evaluating student records.
• Sound counseling techniques with sensitivity and discretion to effectively advise students of various social, cultural, economic, and educational backgrounds in the resolution of problems.
• Demonstrated ability in making quality decisions and judgments in analyzing and evaluating student data and academic records.
• Ability to interpret, recommend and implement academic policies, procedures, and regulations as related to academic advising.
• Strong interpersonal and public presentation skills.
• Strong organizational skills.
• Ability to multi-task with demanding time-frames, and pay attention to detail in a fast-paced environment.
• Ability to use discretion and maintain confidentiality.
• Experience working independently under general direction in a high volume, fast paced, team-oriented environment, exercising good judgment, creativity and initiative in performance of job responsibilities in higher education.
• Strong knowledge of MS Office, Blackboard, and other software is preferred.
• Skill, knowledge, and experience in effective academic advising techniques. Ability to evaluate students' needs, and facilitate student decision making
• Experience working with co-curricular programs and teaching is strongly preferred.
• Master's degree preferred but not required.
