Bioinformatician II

The Duke Human Vaccine Institute (DHVI) is searching for a candidate who will be responsible for performing a variety of bioinformatics analyses related to vaccine design. DHVI is recognized as a world-leading organization in vaccine development with an infectious disease vaccine candidate portfolio that includes HIV-1, influenza, and malaria. The candidate will work with an interdisciplinary team of scientists supporting the analysis of large data sets and providing specialized bioinformatics solutions. Candidates with strong backgrounds in computational structural biology are encouraged to apply.

Work Performed:
  • Implement computational protein design algorithms for improving vaccine immunogen designs.
  • Analyze antibody-antigen interactions using structural modeling.
  • Develop and implement innovative computational approaches for the analysis of large sequence datasets including those generated by next generation sequencing platforms.
  • Work independently on the creation of custom bioinformatics tools specific to solving vaccine design and development challenges.
  • Assist investigators with the interpretation of results, write publication quality descriptions of methods and attend lab meetings.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Education/Training:
Work requires a M.S. in bioinformatics, computer science or related field. A Ph.D. is strongly preferred.

Experience:
Work requires at least 5 years of experience in bioinformatics. Highly proficient programming skills and experience working in a UNIX/Linux environment are required. Extensive experience with the development of computational methods and programs for the analysis of structural data. Experience with web-based bioinformatics tools, public domain biological databases and software tools for sequence and structural analysis. Experience with Perl or Python, R or MATLAB, web design, database systems, high performance computing environments, and statistics. Proficiency in C++ programming is highly preferred. Excellent oral, written, and presentations skills required.

Education

Work requires a M.S. in the biological sciences with demonstrable computational skills or a M.S. in computer science with a strong interest in biology/genomics.

Experience

Work requires at least 5 years of experience in bioinformatics.Experience with web-based bioinformatics tools, public domain biological databases and software tools for sequence, domain and structural analysis. Extensive familiarity with and development of computational tools in biology that use genomic data to generate biological hypotheses. Experience with a procedural language,proficient in Java, Perl, 'C', web design, DNA genome informatics, proteomics informatics, statistics, and computer science.
