Posting Summary:
The UVA Department of Ophthalmology is seeking an experienced ophthalmic technician to provide support to our new refractive service. This position offers generous benefits, support for continuing education, and a competitive salary that is based on experience and certification level.

The primary responsibility of this position will be as chief technician to our refractive surgeon. The technician will conduct all appropriate diagnostic testing, schedule procedures, provide patient education and assistance, and assist the physician during procedures.

We are seeking a motivated individual with strong technical skills, excellent history taking capability, broad knowledge of ophthalmic terminology and diseases, exceptional communication and patient care skills, and the ability to efficiently use an electronic health record.

Minimum requirements:
At least 8 years of experience as a JCAHPO certified technician (COA, COT or COMT)
Current certification of COT or higher
Five years of experience as a technician in a refractive practice
Five years of experience as a LASIK counselor
Five years of experience using Pentacam, Visx laser, Visx Wavescan

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
1. Ability to interact with patients, referring physicians, faculty and other departmental personnel.
2. Conversant with both digital and film photography and medical terminology.
3. Understanding of ophthalmic pathology, and working knowledge of all common ophthalmic diagnostic tests.
