Assistant/Associate Professor, Department of Fiber Science & Apparel Design
Department of Fiber Science and Apparel Design
The Department of Fiber Science & Apparel Design is one of five academic units in the College of Human Ecology at Cornell University. The graduate field of textiles offers an M.S. and a Ph.D. in fiber science as well as in apparel design. The undergraduate program offers options in fiber science, fashion design, and fashion design management. The department has the only fiber science and apparel design program offered in the Ivy League and is part of a world class, major research university with top ranking engineering and physical science departments. The department has recently established the Cornell Institute of Fashion and Fiber Innovation (CIFFI) and has various state of the art facilities such as 3D body scanning, 3D motion capture system, sweating thermal manikin and fiber/polymer characterization. Faculty also have access to specialized research facilities in materials science, nanofabrication, supercomputing, etc. and the opportunity to collaborate with the Cornell Center for Materials Research, the Cornell NanoScale Facility, Atkinson Center for Sustainable Future, the Entrepreneurship and Personal Enterprise Program, and the Weill Cornell Medical College in New York City among others.
The successful candidate will be expected to develop a prominent research program in fiber science by obtaining outside funding, competing for center/program grants, training undergraduate researchers, M.S. and Ph.D. level graduate students and mentoring postdoctoral associates. The research should be based in the natural sciences or engineering with emphasis on a multidisciplinary approach and on emerging topics such as innovative fiber materials, fiber chemistry, novel dyes and finishes, smart fibers, etc. and should add a significant new capability to the department. The candidate will teach undergraduate and graduate courses in line with needs of the department and will be expected to take an active role in the department, college and university. Undergraduate teaching may include fiber science, textile chemistry, textile and apparel quality assessment and related courses for fiber/textile science, fashion design and fashion design management students.
An earned Doctorate in the natural sciences, engineering, or an allied field with a strong emphasis on fiber, textile, material, or related discipline is required. Demonstrated success in obtaining outside funding and a strong publication record are also required. Experience in teaching is preferred.
This is a nine-month, tenure-track position with 50% research/50% teaching responsibility. Assistant/Associate Professor preferred, but rank is open; salary and rank are commensurate with qualifications. Excellent fringe benefits are provided.
