Pathology Research

Occ Summary
Perform a variety of complex technical duties involved in conducting laboratory tests, experiments and determinations in support of Duke University research operations.We are an accredited human tissue biorepository housed in the Department of Pathology. The individual hired will be responsible for human tissue and blood collection, processing, storage,and distribution for a wide variety of clinical research protocols.

Work Performed
  • Collect fresh human tissue and fluid specimens from surgical procedures and other medical procedures (e.g. biopsies) to be stored for future research.
  • Prepare human tissue and fluid specimens for complex procedures.
  • These procedures include(but are not limited to) tissue processing, paraffin embedding, snap freezing, DNA/RNA extraction,and blood fractionation.
  • Troubleshoot in collaboration with other team members and Operations Manager when issues arise.
  • Be knowledgeable of specialized protocols and efficiently and accurately follow SOPs.
  • Enter all data associated with laboratory activities in our database within one working day.
  • Collaborate with investigators from a variety of disciplines to provide high quality biospecimens for research.
  • Set up, clean, and maintain instruments, equipment, and materials to for biobank operations.
  • Work with senior laboratory members to ensure completion and timeliness of preventive maintenance and/or repairs, and compliance with CAP requirements.
  • Maintain sufficient inventory of material, supplies, and equipment for performance of duties.
  • Assist in training new personnel.
  • Applicant must be able to keep a flexible, positive attitude in a dynamic, often-changing environment.
  • Attention to detail, commitment to quality, and a strong work ethic are a must.
  • Our team interacts with working groups throughout the medical center and must maintain a respectful working relationship with all, so strong interpersonal skills are a must.
  • Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.
  • In addition, the employee will be expected to carry a pager outside of their regular working hours, including weekends and holidays, based on a rotating schedule with the rest of the team.
  • Prepare culture media, chemicals,reagents and solutions.
  • Maintain sufficient inventory of material, supplies and equipment
  • Determine and set up instruments, material and apparatus and operate
  • Review laboratory methods manual, scientific journals, abstracts
  • Confer with principal investigator to review work assignments and compile,analyze, document and draw tentative conclusions from experimental results. physical, chemical, biological and other research laboratory tests,experiments and determinations to obtain data for research purposes; develop plans for research experiments; make minor modifications to existing laboratory procedures and techniques to meet the needs of the particular equipment as required.other literature for information applicable to research experiments.laboratory equipment required for specific tests.
  • Obtain, prepare, mount and stain tissue, blood and other substances for microscopic examination.performance of duties; clean and maintain laboratory equipment.
  • Review work of lower level laboratory personnel within designated areas and assist in training new personnel.

The expected daily hours for this position will be 9:30 am - 6 pm,Monday through Friday, with possible schedule variations due to staffing needs.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Histology background
• Clinical laboratory experience
• Clinical research experience, including SOCRA certification
