Deputy University Spokespersons direct the strategic communication process that builds mutually beneficial relationships between University organizations and the public. They promote a positive image of the University by providing information about the institution to students, staff and faculty, and the public. They have advanced knowledge of and expertise in public relations, event management, and community outreach, as well as strategic planning and project management experience. Deputy University Spokespersons work independently, make decisions in alignment with the strategic communications goals of the organization, and help to set the public relations strategy for the University.
Develop and prepare written communications and content that represent the official voice and position of the University of Virginia to include official statements, news releases, op-editorials, letters to the editor and other official communication mediums.
Respond to external media inquiries in an accurate and timely manner to productively and efficiently elevate the University as a highly referenced authority compared to national peers.
Working with the University Spokesperson, prepare and train senior University officials to participate in interviews and discussions with national media outlets. Offer strategic counsel and support to the University Spokesperson.
Serve as the University's primary Deputy Spokesperson when necessary and in the absence of the University Spokesperson.
Represent the University's best interests within the University community and with various internal and external constituencies.
Advise the University Spokesperson on communications strategies for managing emerging issues associated with ongoing University-wide programs and significant initiatives associated with the University's new five-year strategic plan.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Ability to exercise analytical and evaluating skills; ability to convincingly present PR concepts and to function in a deadline-driven environment;
Ability and willingness to work as a member of a team while maintaining impartiality and objectivity;
Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Ability to make effective decisions in a timely manner, sometimes with incomplete information and under tight deadlines and pressure.
High degree of professionalism and discretion.
