The Grace E. Harris Leadership Institute in the L. Douglas Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs at Virginia Commonwealth University seeks an experienced leader to serve as its Associate Director. The Grace E. Harris Leadership Institute was established in May 1999 by the Board of Visitors at Virginia Commonwealth University in honor of Grace E. Harris, Ph.D., upon her retirement from the position of provost and vice president for academic affairs. Harris has served the university for more than 40 years in the roles of faculty member, dean, vice provost, provost and vice president for academic affairs, and acting president, becoming the highest-ranking woman and highest-ranking African-American in VCU's history. The Grace E. Harris Leadership Institute develops and implements programs based on the principles of collaboration and partnership. Other unique features of the Institute include its strong theoretical grounding in the concept of transformational leadership, its commitment to long-term relationships with clients and participants and its focus on leadership in academic and community settings. The Institute also conducts research and disseminates knowledge on the best practices in leadership.

The Associate Director serves as a member of the Institute's leadership team, providing senior leadership for a comprehensive portfolio of leadership programs. He/she will work closely with the Director to ensure the operational success of the Institute's leadership development programs by designing and delivering high-impact programming to advance high potential and high performing employees in public, private and nonprofit sectors. The selected individual will have responsibility for the operational success of the Institute's leadership programs including: program planning and organizing, participant recruitment, staffing, curriculum development and administration, implementation, evaluation and dissemination, and alumni engagement. The Senior Program Associate will play a critical role in coaching, supporting and developing professionals in university and community settings in an effort to maximize performance and ensure that program participants are supported, inspired, and empowered to seek and pursue leadership opportunities at all levels. The responsibilities encompass a wide variety of content and administrative duties in the areas of curriculum development, program management and leadership; staff development; and programmatic expansion.

The Associate Director performs a wide range of duties including:

Curriculum development, planning and implementation

Program planning and operational management

Strategic leadership to achieve the organization's goals

Community engagement to enhance and increase opportunities for external partnerships

Qualifications: The ideal candidate will have a Master's degree or equivalent in the respective or related field (Ph.D. preferred) along with experience and an understanding of higher education leadership, women's leadership in a broad context, and leadership by/in underserved communities; Commitment and passion for the Institute's mission; Effective written, verbal, and presentation skills are required as well as demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or a commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU.
