Senior Clerk Typist – 10 Month

The Office of Undergraduate Admissions at The College of New Jersey seeks a hardworking, self-motivated individual for the position of Senior Clerk Typist for the months of September through June. The Senior Clerk Typist is expected to process freshman and transfer applications in the PAWS system, along with data entry duties related to prospect requests, on-campus visitations, and budgetary expenditures.  The Senior Clerk Typist responds to phone and e-mail inquiries related to the application process, college programs, on-campus events, deadlines and other general campus inquiries.  The Senior Clerk Typist must have strong interpersonal skills, be highly organized and be able to conduct a variety of data entry duties in a timely fashion.


  • One (1) year of experience in clerical work including typing and answering phones

NOTE: Successful completion of a clerical training program with a minimum of 700 clerical training hours or 30 semester hour credits in secretarial science from an accredited college or university may be substituted for the experience indicated above. Coursework must include typing skills, methods, and procedures; other courses may include, but not be limited to, office procedures, word processing, and business English.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Associates or Bachelor’s degree

  • Extensive data entry in Windows-based computer system

  • Experience in higher education or an academic setting

  • Effective verbal and communication skills

Under a new residency bill signed into law by Governor Chris Christie, any individual hired on, or after September 1, 2011, will be required to establish a principal residence in New Jersey unless their position is exempt. New employees will have a full 365 days to establish such residence, from the effective date of hire. Any new employee who believes that they have a critical need to live outside of New Jersey, or that a move to a permanent residence within the state would constitute a hardship, may request an exemption from the provisions of the law by appealing to a five-member committee to be established by the State for the purpose of hearing such appeals.

This is a competitive Civil Service position with the state title, Senior Clerk Typist. It is included for membership in the Communication Workers of America, CWA bargaining union. Applications will be received until September 29th, 2017. The starting salary for this position is Range P05, step 1, $25,751.98. Salary for an internal candidate will be determined in accordance with Civil Service rules. Submissions received after that date will only be considered if a suitable candidate has not been identified. Final offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of a background investigation.
