UNC Asheville is seeking a Benefits Specialist to support the Benefits and Employee Relations Manager by coordinating the University's benefits programs. This position will provide experienced, exemplary customer service support to staff, faculty, and retirees regarding a broad range of benefit programs. The Benefits Specialist interprets and applies federal and state guidelines, regulations and laws appropriately and in a manner that is consistent with university policies and procedures, (e.g., COBRA, HIPAA, ERISA, FMLA, ACA,). The Benefit Specialist must be able to solve complex problems through research and analysis, with the ability to respond appropriately to various trends and patterns.

HR staff members are encouraged to take an active role to engage in the institution's efforts in promoting diversity and inclusion throughout the workplace. The successful candidate will be expected to foster an inclusive work culture where uniqueness of beliefs, backgrounds, talents, capabilities and ways of living are respected and welcomed.

Preferred candidates will have a bachelor's degree, at least 3 years of benefits administration experience and:
  • Experience in benefits administration, including group health insurance and retirement programs;
  • Compliance expertise regarding state and federal legislation (e.g., COBRA, HIPAA, ERISA, FMLA, ACA, and other relevant labor laws);
  • HRIS experience, familiarity with Banner a plus;
  • Able to work in a fast-paced environment, prioritize and manage multiple requests and deadlines;
  • Detail oriented, with strong organizational skills;
  • Ability to demonstrate good judgment, empathy, and compassion appropriate for the situation and all parties involved;
  • PHR or CEBS certification.
