Primary Function of Organization Unit: The fundamental mission of the Department of Molecular and Structural Biochemistry at NC State University is the discovery and dissemination of new knowledge through original and innovative research, instruction, and outreach. The department promotes a culture of interdisciplinary team research, through which we strive to achieve the goals of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) to solve grand challenges in food security, human health, environmental stewardship, and sustainability in agriculture and energy. Teaching in the department balances an interdependence of formal classroom instruction with laboratory research methods. Classroom instruction and biological organization from the atomic/molecular to the organismal. Our didactic excellence in biochemistry, molecular biology and biophysics is exemplified in a high quality undergraduate bachelors degree program, and rigorous masters and doctoral graduate programs.

Essential Job Duties: The Department of Molecular and Structural Biochemistry at North Carolina State University invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position, at the Assistant Professor rank, in the broad area of metabolic nutritional biochemistry. The position will be 80% Research and 20% Teaching, which is a typical split for research programs in the department. The successful candidate will be expected to develop a vigorous, independently funded research program in nutrient uptake, assimilation, metabolism, and metabolic homeostasis, at the level of cellular and tissue communication. Potential areas of focus include signal transduction pathways, metabolic flux, metabolomic characterization of nutrient output and/or metabolic pathways, using small and/or large animal models with translational application. This position will have opportunities for collaboration with biochemistry faculty who have expertise in nutrient/hormone metabolism and disease, and will bridge collaborative efforts between the departments of Animal Science and Food, Bioprocessing, and Nutrition Sciences. In particular, the position is expected to interface with research programs in Food, Bioprocessing, and Nutrition Sciences that are focused on nutrition and macro/micro/phytonutrient characterization and delivery, and translational impacts on human health, and with Animal Science research in reproductive physiology and/or endocrinology related to nutrition and nutrient use. The position will further complement research initiatives in regenerative medicine involving the College of Veterinary Medicine, Plants for Human Health Institute, and Department of Animal Science, and will benefit from an extraordinarily rich environment for metabolomics research at the basic/translational interface. Upon hiring, the proposed faculty member will be considered for an associate appointment in the Food, Bioprocessing, and Nutrition Science department and aid in teaching graduate level Nutritional Biochemistry courses. Minimum Education/Experience: Ph.D. in Biochemistry, Nutrition Sciences or a related field and a minimum of two years' postdoctoral or equivalent experience.

Department Required Skills: Strong capacity to teach at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, including mentoring of doctoral students and postdoctoral fellows.

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education: Priority will be given to candidates that have demonstrated abilities to form interdisciplinary collaborations that reach across academic units. Demonstrated inclusiveness and experience promoting diversity, as well as classroom instruction, mentoring, and grant submission are highly desirable.
