Primary Function of Organization Unit: The Office of Research, Innovation, and Economic Development (ORIED) plays a critical role in NC State's success as a preeminent R1 university. ORIED actively support and nurture the research enterprise, providing resources, expertise, and regulatory control, leading the way to advance innovation and discovery. Research Operations provides leadership in development, planning and implementation of ORIED's strategic goals and initiatives. The unit provides logistical (both administrative and operational) support to all ORIED units in the areas of strategic initiatives, reporting, centers and research cores, research development activities, communications, marketing, web services, special events, etc. The unit leads all communications, marketing and web activities for ORIED and facilitates activities between ORIED units and University Communications. Essential Job Duties: The Assistant Director of Marketing and Outreach is the primary communication and engagement officer for the Research Operations Office, part of NC State's Office of Research, Innovation and Economic Development (ORIED). The Assistant Director will develop and implement communication and engagement strategies to build visibility of research at NC State through a broad range of communications that showcase our research strengths and successes and our excellent faculty, staff, students, services and products to internal as well as external audiences. The Assistant Director will be responsible for: - Engaging in outreach to new research partners, including orientation offerings; increasing reach of communication avenues to internal and external research partners and potential sponsors. - Supporting interdisciplinary research by developing and executing initiatives, programs, and events designed to stimulate innovation across Colleges and research centers. - Identifying partners for collaboration across the research triangle and developing new ways to strengthen those key relationships. - Leading the creative development, writing, and production of both print and electronic materials to include graphic identity, brochures, presentations, fact sheets, newsletters, and web and social media content for both NC State and external audiences. - Collaborating with the ORIED Communications Team to develop materials/reports and communications strategies designed to increase awareness of research strategic events, initiatives, and research outcomes (i.e., annual reports, Results magazine, web development, tear sheets and other targeted pieces). - Conceptualizing and leading long- and short-term projects geared towards communicating and marketing the unique value proposition of ORIED and its subunits, ultimately increasing utilization of research-centered resources and interdisciplinary research opportunities. - Building and maintaining strong, collaborative relationships with external vendors and NC State partners (i.e. University Communications and Colleges) and service providers to effectively execute projects and drive innovative communication strategies - Communicating frequently with the University's top administrators, corporate executives, donors, peers, faculty, staff, students and the media.
Minimum Education/Experience: -Bachelor's degree in Marketing, Communications or other similar field and at least three years of relevant experience.
Department Required Skills: -Thorough knowledge of best practices in written and multimedia communications development required -Experience leading and participating in team projects, building and sustaining meaningful professional relationships that position the organization, its people, and programs for success - Exceptional organizational and communication skills (oral and written) along with the ability to work with faculty, administrators, industry partners, and other internal and external contacts -Demonstrated experience leading long-term, multi-stage projects or initiatives -Demonstrated experience writing annual reports, blogs, copy for printed materials and/or web materials. -Experience in social media strategy and implementation
Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education: - Demonstrated experience creating and implementing a dynamic, strategic marketing and communications plan - Experience extending research to surrounding communities through educational and outreach initiatives - Seven + years of relevant communications and/or marketing experience - Experience with graphic design software (such as Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign) and general design principles - Experience in leading communications and messaging for organizational change
