Job Summary:

This position serves as the primary executive administrative support person for the Vice Provost for Diversity and Climate/Chief Diversity Officer (VPCDO), and reports directly to the VPCDO's Special Assistant. Numerous individuals contact the office, including directors and staff of the departments in the Division of Diversity Equity and Educational Achievement (DDEEA) who report to the VPCDO, university officers, faculty, staff, students, alumni, members of the community at large, public officials, donors, and people involved with a wide range of political and social issues. The DDEEA was formally chartered in the fall 2010. The division includes one of the nation's largest K-16 higher education pipeline programs, the nation's only urban art scholarship program learning community, the university's affirmative action office, the largest strategic partnership with the Posse program, federally funded TRIO efforts designed to facilitate the success of first-generation and low-income students, and a range of offices, programs and initiatives designed to enhance intergroup dialogue, campus climate and community building efforts institutionally. The incumbent must handle all communications in a knowledgeable, courteous and diplomatic fashion.

The position is responsible for providing high level administrative support to the VPCDO. Therefore, the position requires the incumbent to exercise a significant degree of independence and autonomy in action and decision-making. The incumbent receives general guidance but is expected to independently develop and maintain activities and procedures to support the responsibilities outlined below. Establishment of work priorities and planning projects/activity completion in which assignments are completed with accuracy and promptness are essential to perform the duties of this position. By the nature and location of this position, the incumbent is privy to confidential records and conversations that directly affect the employer-employee relationship referred to in s.III.81(15) Wis. Stats.

As Chief Diversity Officer, the Vice Provost is responsible for, and is involved in, management decisions and strategies that effect the entire staff in the in the Office of the VPCDO, including personnel and other like confidential matters. In addition, the VPCDO is involved in strategic initiatives for the campus-wide recruitment and retention of faculty, staff and student employees and projects on behalf of the Chancellor, Provost and Vice Chancellor for Administration. The incumbent, therefore, is privy to material, information and discussions directly related to these areas.
