Job Description: Maritime College seeks a highly motivated Director of Development with the skill and experience to plan, coordinate, implement and grow the development program and in particular, the major donor program to meet the College's major gifts fundraising goal and build the donor base. Reporting to the Vice President of University Relations, the Director of Development will work closely with the Director of Annual Giving and Alumni Coordinator to create and execute, in partnership with the Vice President, a comprehensive development program including targeted goals, objectives and activities designed to attract annual giving, planned giving and major gift giving from alumni, faculty and staff, parents, corporations, the maritime industry, and other key constituencies to support academic excellence and special projects and programs. The position will include hands-on management of all program elements, including prospect identification, recruitment, cultivation, solicitation, recognition, and ongoing stewardship activities.
Responsibilities of the Director of Development include:
- Develop and manage strategic development programs for the College that include annual giving, major donors and planned giving among alumni, faculty and staff, students, parents, corporate, foundation and government support.
- Establish and track annual goals and strategies for various giving programs. Report regularly on the progress of the development program.
- Oversee major gifts and individual giving by developing a portfolio of major gift prospects to cultivate and solicit.
- Build philanthropic relationships with external donor prospects and benefactors with the primary goal of securing significant private support.
- Manage effective systems for tracking, cultivating donors/prospects through database.
- Identify, research and qualify prospective donors
- Solicit gifts on behalf of the College
- Research and create case statements and proposals by maintaining a thorough understanding of Maritime's strategic priorities and goals
- Develop cultivation strategies for prospects, engage faculty, Foundation Board, or other organizational supporters as appropriate
- Move potential donors toward solicitation and closure
- Work with the Director of Communications to ensure that donors are aware of SUNY Maritime's academic programs and are kept informed of scholarships, awards and programs made possible by their contributions, and recognize donors for their contributions.
- Expand Maritime's existing planned giving program.
- Develop internal controls to ensure that all fund-raising is coordinated through the development office.
- Develop relationships with alumni, faculty and staff, parents, and students to solicit their assistance in sharing the mission and needs of SUNY Maritime College with potential donors.
- Ensure quality communications follow all gifts to provide thanks, outcomes and documentation to donors.
- Identify and implement opportunities for donor recognition, stewardship, and appreciation.
Required Qualifications: ·
- Bachelor's degree.
- Minimum of five to ten years of progressive experience in the development field with a proven track record of successful gift solicitation and fund-raising.
- Excellent interpersonal, writing, editing, oral communication and presentation skills required. Supervisory experience and the ability to perform multiple tasks with conflicting deadlines.
- Proficiency using a CRM database system such as Raiser's Edge or Ellucian CRM Advance, Word, Excel, PowerPoint
- Exceptional time management, organizational, problem-solving and analytical skills.
- Ability to build and sustain professional relationships grounded in ethical and best practices in fundraising.
- Exceptional professional judgment and ability to make sound decisions. Highly self-motivated and directed.
- Master's degree preferred.
- Fund raising experience in higher education preferred.
Additional Information: The Director of Development is a management confidential position. The anticipated salary range for the position is $90,000 - $120,000 annually, with an outstanding benefits package. Salary will commensurate with qualifications and experience. Special Notes: Full time calendar year appointment. This is a management confidential position which serves at the pleasure of the appointing authority. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Internal and external search to occur simultaneously.
