The University of St. Thomas invites qualified candidates to apply for a Locksmith position within the Office of Facilities Management.

Under general supervision of the Trades Supervisor for the Department of Facilities Maintenance, and in collaboration with your colleagues, performs installation, repair, and maintenance of locks, locking devices, electronic locks, exit devices, doors, door hardware such as closers, panic hardware, and hinges, and related devices throughout campus. This position will also plan, prioritize and oversee master keying security and facility keying.

Ability to respond to emergency locksmith calls outside normal working hours (24/7) is required.

Essential functions of this position include:

  1. Fulfill key requests: including duplication of keys, verification of request validity and verifying appropriate security access.
  2. Completes campus planned and reactive work order requests in a timely efficient manner.
  3. Plans and prioritizes work accordingly which can include unlocking doors, performing repairs, changes and maintenance on all existing hardware (i.e. closers, hinges, door handles, stops, strike plates, and/or other related hardware), locksets, and cylinders.
  4. Performs re-keys to existing cylinders to meet the needs of the university community while maintaining building keying schedules. Must have experience with inter-changeable cores, key codes and core pinning.
  5. Collaborates with other locksmith and locksmith specialist regarding campus repairs and records work within the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
  6. Maintains the security and cleanliness of locksmith shop on a weekly basis.
  7. Monitors potential risks to key boxes, keying systems and pinning documents in digital & hard copy formats. Provides feedback and/or reports regarding ordering of parts, tools, and supplies.
  8. Provides accurate detailed reports regarding master key systems and consults with director, supervisor, other locksmith and other department personnel regarding requests, returns issuance or lock changes.
  9. Performs visual checklist and database audits of key and key tag inventory.
  10. Applies good understanding of regulatory codes related to locksmith functions. Will remain abreast of changing technology and techniques in the field. Reads and responds to e-mail messages. Updates supervisor of project status and ongoing issues.
  11. Responds to emergency locksmith calls outside normal working hours (24/7).
  12. Performs other duties as assigned.

  • High school diploma/GED
  • Vocational/Technical training in Locksmith Trade
  • Seven (7) years progressively responsible experience in the locksmith trade including maintenance and installation of electronic locks
  • Valid Class "C" driver's license
  • General carpentry skills
  • Basic computer experience/skills with knowledge of Microsoft office products
  • Special Skills/Knowledge/Abilites:

  • Basic computer experience/skills with knowledge of Microsoft office products.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the software key programs
  • Must possess ability to safely operate all types of hand/power tools, trade specific equipment, ladders, scaffolding, vehicles, key/sign cutting machines, as well as any other related equipment.
  • Requires ability to perform with medium heavy and maximum exertion.
  • Requires physical ability to bend, stoop, kneel, walk, stand, perform work while standing on ladders or overhead, reach, push, pull, etc.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision, follow verbal and/or written instructions, have steady hands & patience to work with small parts, have good mechanical and mathematical aptitude, use sound judgment, as well as ability to work with confidential information or sensitive situations.
