Essential functions of this position:
Perform law enforcement work at a University campus with full powers of arrest, enforcing the laws of the State and the United States Government. Position has law enforcement authority ranging from traffic control to criminal investigations within a limited geographic jurisdiction. Work involves patrolling an assigned area for response to complaints or calls and for detection of violations in the enforcement of State laws and applicable regulations. Duties include apprehending observed violators committing offenses, investigating violations or complaints in order to assess and handle cases, collection and preservation of evidence and the chain of custody, testifying in court proceedings and performing related work.

N.C. Minimum Required Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
High school diploma or equivalency. Certification as a Law Enforcement Officer in accordance with the provisions of the North Carolina Criminal Justice Training and Standards Commission or the ability to achieve certification within one year of employment.

Additional knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the essential functions of the position:
Must demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills
Must demonstrate an appreciation for and the ability to implement a modern community policing initiative and law enforcement functions within an urban university setting
Must demonstrate the ability to recognize issues and dangerous situations and respond in an appropriate manner
Must demonstrate the ability to understand and operate within applicable laws, policies and procedures
Must demonstrate the ability to work and communicate effectively with diverse populations including students, parents, faculty, staff and the general public
Officers must have a good working knowledge of criminal and civil law and procedures as well as the interpersonal skills to effectively enforce the laws of government to the effect they were designed to accomplish
Officer must have the ability to carry out the responsibilities of the position
Must demonstrate abilities with Microsoft Office Suite (or comparable programs)
If not certified, must be able to complete certification as directed by the department

Certification is required and administered through the NC Administrative Code in 12 NCAC 9A Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission
