DCRI Pragmatic Health Systems Research group integrates electronic health data from various sources across the health care delivery system into a sustainable platform for clinical research. We develop and apply innovative methods to leverage rapidly evolving sources of electronic health to conduct high-impact, pragmatic clinical research studies.

Serve as a project management leadership resource in the day-to-day Pragmatic Health Services Research operations on a portfolio of multiple projects (the portfolio), which may involve a common sponsor or line of service. Plan, direct, and ensure the successful management of the portfolio projects, ensuring operational excellence in the execution of the portfolio. Monitor the financial performance of individual portfolio projects. Areas of responsibility:
Operational Expectations: Manage development and maintenance of project plans, including critical paths. Deliver projects and programs on time and in budget, while meeting the highest quality standards. Ensure timely identification of risks and development of mitigation and contingency plans. Champion change and effectively manages the implementation of new ideas to achieve excellence in all areas of responsibility. Provide team leadership to facilitate the development of project management processes and tools and to help identify and introduce project management best practices.
Employee Development: Provide leadership in the coaching and mentoring of team members to help them achieve individual expectations and deliverables. Provide direction and coaching on project specific tasks as well as individual professional development. Assess resource loads and make appropriate individual assignments. Facilitate problem-resolution and issue escalation across all assigned projects.
Client Satisfaction and Quality: Serve as the primary client contact for the portfolio and ensure understanding of project scope and client expectations for metrics, communication and report delivery. Ensure client satisfaction and maintain awareness of potential client opportunities. Ensure clear, accurate, and timely communication to the client of project status, issues and successes and ensure that contracted services are performed in accordance with sponsor specifications. Support business development efforts through participation in sponsor meetings and assist in the preparation of proposals, budgets, and payment schedules for new projects in conjunction with assigned proposal project leaders


Operations Management
  • Supervise and manage an assigned team of project management and/or clinical research management staff and teams who manage or support projects to ensure quality, time and budget deliverables are met to the satisfaction of the sponsor and that project budgets meet the financial requirements of the DCRI
  • Work with staff to ensure that all study management and project deliverables are completed to the Sponsor's satisfaction, ensuring quality deliverables on time and within budget and in accordance with SOPs, policies and practices
  • Ensure that employees are trained and individual development is aligned and in place to meet project and organizational needs
  • Collaborate with other management and leadership team members to proactively identify project and or individual needs and resourcing solutions in order to manage study issues and obstacles
  • Ensure appropriate use of project management tools
  • Develop and maintain expertise in the following: Electronic Health Records and health information related organizations; CMS and other payer data structures; best practices in utilizing and linking data sources and assessing data quality; statistical principles and considerations for pragmatic health services research, and best practices and procedures used in healthcare delivery and research
Employee Management and Development
  • Manage staff in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable regulations. Responsibilities include planning, assigning, and directing work, appraising performance and guiding professional development; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing employee relations issues and resolving problems
  • Provide coaching and mentoring to employees around project planning, project review, risk management and problem solving. Ensure global alignment of work practices across the team through the adoption and use of all process and technology tools and improvements by employees
  • Obtain and provide regular feedback to employees from other project team members and key stakeholders to assist in personal and professional development. Identify skill and competency gaps at the individual team member level and work to craft development plans that will close the gaps
  • Assist in identifying and recruiting project leaders involved in the conduct of portfolio clinical projects
Financial Management
  • Monitor project expenditures, identify potential efficiencies, and develop strategies to optimize the profitability of portfolio projects
Business Development and Marketing
  • Support business development efforts by serving as an operational representative developing proposals and bid defenses and responding to inquiries regarding operational activities
  • Develop of operational plans for new project proposals including the services the DCRI will provide, as well as potential collaborations and outsourcing
  • Represent the operational capabilities with faculty and potential sponsors regarding potential research projects
  • Provides input to DCRI functional groups regarding staffing and resource needs for potential and newly awarded clinical research projects
An advanced degree and formal training in project management processes and tools is highly desirable. PMP certification from the Project Management Institute or other recognized project management credential is highly desired

Minimum Qualifications


Work requires graduation from an accredited degree program providing clinical training as a Registered Nurse (RN), Physician's Assistant (PA) or Pharmacist plus four years of healthcare experience; or one of the following equivalents:
1. Completion of an allied health degree (e.g., Respiratory Therapy, Radiologic Technology, Licensed Practical Nurse) or Associates degree in Clinical Trials Research related curriculum plus a minimum of seven years healthcare experience; or
2. Completion of a master's degree in Public Health, Health Administration or a related area with three years directly related clinical trials research experience; or
3. Completion of a bachelor's degree plus a minimum of five years directly related experience in clinical trials research; or
4. Completion of a bachelor's degree plus a minimum of six years closely related research experience.

**State of North Carolina license may be required.**



Highly Preferred Experience

5 years research experience, preferably in health services
Minimum 2 years' experience managing teams
Current demonstrated program/portfolio management experience
