The research assistant will: (1) perform original, creative research at a level that can be published in competitive peer-reviewed journals, including performance of assigned research tasks as well as formulation and testing of original research hypotheses; (2) plan and execute short- and long-term strategies to accomplish research goals within the time constraints of this appointment; (3) keep accurate and detailed records of all work performed, all methods used, and all results obtained in an approved, bound laboratory notebook or an approved electronic format; (4) maintain all experimental animals, cultures specimens and samples required for the completion of the designated research; (5) contribute to the production of manuscripts describing the designated research.
Bachelor of science degree required with at least five years of hands on laboratory experience including sterile technique, bacterial cell culture and characterization, general molecular biology lab techniques including DNA extraction, purification, qualitative and quantitative analysis of DNA samples, gene and genome sequencing, annotation and analysis. Extensive knowledge of the biology of the bivalve family Teredinidae and its intracellular symbionts.
This appointment is funded by a grant received from an outside source. The duration of this position is contingent upon the continued availability of funding from this grant at its current financial level.
