The University of South Carolina School of Law is seeking a full-time, non-tenure-track faculty appointment to teach and supervise a Veterans Legal Clinic. This is a grant funded temporary position with an end date of 9/30/2018.
Applicants should be able to demonstrate an ability to provide legal services to clients and supervise or provide for qualified supervision of all client matters handled in the Veterans Legal Clinic, provide supervision of student attorneys, manage case files, teach a 6 credit clinic course, and collaborate with other legal services and veteran services providers throughout the community to meet the needs of qualifying veterans for access to legal services.
The Veterans' Legal Clinic supervisor must be a member in good standing of the South Carolina Bar who has complied with all requirements of the South Carolina Appellate Court Rules to supervise students under the South Carolina Supreme Court Student Practice Rule. The supervisor has the following duties:
Provide legal services to clients and supervise or provide for qualified supervision of all client matters handled in the Veterans' Legal Clinic, including regular supervision of student contacts with clients; supervision of student preparation of client files; and appearing with students in court. Take reasonable steps to ensure that all matters related to the clinic are handled professionally and in compliance with the South Carolina Rules of Professional Conduct.
Supervise the clinic's Legal Assistant/Paralegal with responsibility for ensuring that malpractice insurance is maintained and that proper measures are in place to provide for the security and maintenance of client files; the proper operation of the case management system; and the proper handling of the clinic's trust account. •
Collaborate with other legal services and veteran services providers to best utilize the resources of the Veterans' Legal Clinic to meet the needs of qualifying veterans for access to legal services.
Working with the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and the Director of the Clinical Education Program, recruit qualified volunteer adjunct faculty to provide additional supervision of students under the Student Practice Rule and review adjunct faculty performance regularly to ensure that students are adequately supervised and that legal services are provided in a consistent, professional, and high-quality manner.
Provide appropriate classroom instruction for law students enrolled in the Veterans' Legal Clinic each semester (including summer session).Qualifications
Applicants must have a J.D., be or become a member in good standing of the South Carolina Bar, and have at least seven years of experience either in the practice of law and/or in supervising a law school clinic.
