Job Summary:
Portland Community College's Apprenticeship & Trades seeks an instructional support technician for teachers of the trades at the Swan Island Trades Center.

The instructional support tech (IST) assists instructors in getting tools and equipment ready for classes, putting tools and equipment away after classes, and ordering supplies needed for classes.

In addition, the IST serves on the Safety Committee and assists the Department in the resolution of safety concerns. For example, the IST may help the department properly label materials or implement processes for the safe disposal of materials.

The successful candidate will be mechanically inclined, good with tools, and attentive to project details. Also, they will be good in communicating clearly, effectively and respectfully with a variety of people.

The Swan Island Trades Center is a training facility for people aspiring to careers in the Electrical Trades, HVAC, and Facilities Maintenance Technology. Responsibilities/Duties:
Responsibilities/Duties

1. Works with faculty/instructional administrator to design, construct, modify or rebuild equipment, modules, experiments that will be used in the classrooms/laboratories in a division comprised of various related but different subject areas. Provides technical assistance to students, faculty and staff; troubleshoots and diagnoses problems with equipment; may assist in setting up laboratories.

2. Coordinates the support activities of many laboratories; establishes procedures for the use of equipment, supplies, materials, software, hardware, machinery and other items used; insures that faculty and students are oriented to the proper uses of the laboratories.

3. Provides work direction for student helpers, work study students and staff; coordinates work schedules to insure coverage; orients new staff to the procedures and policies of the laboratories; trains staff in the safe maintenance and use of all equipment used in the laboratories; monitors performance and reports any problems to administrative supervision.

4. Acquires, maintains and inventories equipment, materials, supplies, written materials, software and hardware required for student instructional needs; performs repairs on equipment; checks out equipment, supplies, materials to students; maintains contact with appropriate vendors.

5. Maintains records of activities undertaken in the support of the laboratories which may include typing forms, inputting data or otherwise retaining information regarding the acquisition, maintenance and distribution of tools, equipment, materials, supplies, and/or written materials.

6. Provides for the general cleanliness and security of the laboratories or work areas; disposed of hazardous materials according to specific instructions relating to their disposal; assists in providing for a safe environment for the conduct of the laboratories. Reports maintenance problems as they occur.

Minimum Qualifications:

High school diploma or equivalent and two years of post-secondary education in a specific technical discipline appropriate to the instructional support (experience performing the duties described above may substitute for the post-secondary education requirement on a year-for-year basis).

One year of experience supporting laboratory activities in the technical area is required;

Must have proven communications skills adequate to assist students in understanding the work they are to perform.


WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Work pressure, disturbances of work flow and/or irregularities in work schedule are expected and occur on an intermittent basis. Changes in the performance environment require occasional upgrading of skills. Working conditions may be somewhat disagreeable requiring occasional exposure to safety hazards, noise and temperature.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Some learned physical skills are required. Physical effort such as frequent standing, walking and lifting; guiding and/or carrying of lightweight materials or equipment; occasional periods of sustained effort.

Special/Preferred Qualifications:

1. Experience with the safe and proper operation and maintenance of tools and power tools.

2. Experience building, repairing, and/or maintaining things. This can be professional or personal experience.

3. Competence with computers. Ability to search internet for information, answer emails, create Word and/or Excel documents.

4. Strong interpersonal skills. Ability to communicate clearly, effectively and respectfully with a variety of people.
