This is a full-time, benefits eligible, at will position. This position is designated exempt under FLSA and not eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. but may vary based on operational needs.
The incumbent has responsibility for planning and managing the external financial reporting activities of the University. Primary among these responsibilities is maintaining the University’s GAAP reporting ledger. Within that responsibility, the incumbent must ensure the GAAP ledger and its values are properly aligned with the values in the University’s Legal accounting ledger, which uses the modified cash basis of accounting. In addition, approximately 100 journal entries are recorded annually to the GAAP ledger to ensure the University’s external reporting package is in compliance with Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) standards.
In addition to maintaining the GAAP ledger, the incumbent is also responsible for coordinating the annual external financial statement audit. Therefore, the incumbent is expected to proactively seek out information about new and significant ongoing activities of the University and become knowledgeable and conversant in the underlying business reasons for such activities. The incumbent is also expected to work with various departments across campus to recognize and anticipate audit issues well before such issues are articulated by the University’s external auditors.
The incumbent also assists the University’s Athletics Department in the maintenance of the Athletics program’s reporting ledger. Annually, the Athletics program is required to have certain agreed-upon procedures performed by an external independent accountant in compliance with NCAA guidelines. The incumbent is responsible for recommending the agreed-upon procedure to be performed each year and assisting the Athletics Department with the process of having those procedures performed by the external independent accountant.
The incumbent is responsible for the maintenance of the University’s capital assets subsidiary ledger. In this capacity, the incumbent is expected to routinely meet with various departments on campus that are integral to maintaining the subsidiary ledger, which has over $950 million of assets recorded. As part of this responsibility this position is also responsible for the approval of construction project funding certifications, assisting Planning, Design and Construction with accounting issues, and assuring that the University is in compliance with bond retention regulations.

Compensation and Benefits
Starting salary upon appointment not expected to exceed $7,900-$8,750 per month. CSU Classification Salary Range: $3,726 - $12,767 per month. Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department's fiscal resources.

• A bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field.
• A minimum of five years of experience, including managerial experiences, in the audit practice of a national or international accounting firm.
• The incumbent is required to be in active status as a Certified Public Accountant.
Preferred Qualifications and Specialized Skills
• Experience at the management level on a substantial audit engagement. Included in that experience, the incumbent should have audited an organizationally complex client with multiple staff, requiring consolidation of multiple entities or funds.
• A master’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field.
• Expertise and experience in applying accounting standards for an institution of higher education.
• Experience working with private not-for-profits entities.
• Experience with data query tools.
