Job Title Director, Media & Public Relations
The Director of Media and Public Relations is a member of the University Marketing and Communications leadership team responsible for planning, developing and executing an effective media and public relations program to generate and maintain a strong local, regional, state, and national public presence for the University and support the University's mission.
Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, English or related field.
Eight years of substantial experience in public relations, public information, media relations.
Experience in the development of communication services and products.
Experience with marketing, advertising, and promotional communications as they relate to educational institutions.
Eight years of experience in writing for the public.
Successful experience in managing media relations in all phases including writing press releases and media advisories, responding to media inquiries, building relationships with media and generating media interest.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Advanced verbal and written communications development experience in promoting non-profit, government agency or educational institution.
Ability to develop and deliver presentations.
Demonstrated success in working as a team member to produce marketing and communication products.
Experience in cultivating relationships with local, national and higher education media.
Knowledge of marketing, advertising, and promotional communications as they relate to educational institutions.
Thorough understanding of social media and other digital platforms.
Skill and ability to use outstanding judgment, attention to detail and perform tasks with accuracy.
Ability to communicate effectively in writing and orally, including proficiency in spelling and grammar.
Excellent organizational and time management skills.
Ability to work independently to achieve desired results.
Skill and ability to prioritize and meet deadlines.
Salary Range $75,000 - $80,000
Essential Job Duties
•Directs media relations to promote the University to alumni, donor, internal and external audiences by gathering, writing, and editing material for press releases.
•Plans, coordinates and implements an effective internal and external public relations program designed to keep the public informed of the programs and achievements of the University.
•Cultivates expert sources within the University to help promote the faculty, staff, and programs on campus. Plans, develops, and executes an effective media program to generate and maintain a strong local, regional, state, and national public presence for the University and support the University's mission.
•Creates and monitors analytics and compiles quarterly metrics related to media outreach efforts.
•Creates, maintains and distributes editorial calendar.
•Promotes a positive image of the University and explores FGCU story ideas to advance the University's mission, vision, goals, and achievements through a proactive media relations program.
•Maintains effective relationships with media sources to increase airtime and print space for University news.
•Develops media relations program on local, regional, state, and national levels.
• Writes and edits materials for a variety of sources including website media, social media, articles, and reports.
•Coordinates media access to campus and provides media management for special events. Represents the organization at various promotional events and business/community meetings.
•Provides expert consultation, training and advice on university media relations, including advising faculty and staff on how to prepare for interviews.
•Creates and manages the university's expert and speaker lists.
•Performs other duties as assigned.
