At Stony Brook Medicine, Hospital Attendants are valuable members of our team, who attend to the daily living and personal hygiene needs of patients in order to make patients more comfortable. They may also devote considerable time to housekeeping and cleaning tasks related to patient care and to the transporting of patients.
Qualified candidates should demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills and time management skills. They should have attention to detail and be able to work with all levels of the organization.
Duties include but are not limited to:
- Track unit equipment inventory: Assure preventive maintenance dates are current on unit par level patient care equipment. Coordinate repairs and inspection of equipment with BME. Return process for equipment and supplies.
- Ensure Product Inventory: Purchase necessary in-stores items for the assigned unit by placing requisitions utilizing the Lawson system. Tracking of requisitions to ensure items are received. Return of unnecessary or surplus supplies.
- Maintenance of Nursing Unit and Environment: Maintain clean and soiled utility areas. Ensure Personal Protection Equipment is readily available in all patient care areas. Assure compliance to hospital environmental process and standard as well as regulatory and accreditation agency standards for physical environment. Conduct environmental rounds, assess environmental problems, and contact appropriate service to resolve problems. Monitor completion of improvement. Coordinate with Maintenance Services for unit repairs as required. Ensure safe environment.
- Other Duties: Obtain bulk list and order bulk supplies via the Lawson system, Order supplies from Central Sterile and Exchange Cart as requested by the nursing staff, Verbalize role during an emergency situation on the unit, in an emergency situation may be assigned temporary duties as needed, Assist in patient transport and patient room turnover, as a vital part of throughput, answer telephone calls and intercom pages, receive and transmit messages promptly and accurately.
Required Qualifications: Ability to perform medium to heavy physical labor.
Preferred Qualifications: Previous experience working in a hospital setting and/or in the hospital industry. Previous inventory distribution and inventory control experience. Possess excellent interpersonal skills, time management skills, have attention to detail and be able to work with all levels of the organization. One year experience in a hospital setting and experience with patient transport, hospital equipment, hospital supplies, Lawson and Capacity Management.Special Notes: Stony Brook Medicine is a smoke free environment. Smoking is strictly prohibited anywhere on campus, including parking lots and outdoor areas on the premises. All Hospital positions are subject to changes in pass days and shifts as necessary. This position may require the wearing of respiratory protection, which may prohibit the wearing of facial hair.
This function/position has been designated as “essential.” This means that when the Hospital is faced with an institutional emergency, employees in such positions may be required to remain at their work location or to report to work to protect, recover, and continue operations at Stony Brook Medicine, Stony Brook University Hospital and related facilities.
