Humanities and Social Science Librarian/Assistant Librarian
University Libraries: Humanities and Social Sciences Librarian/Assistant Librarian. Miami University Libraries seeks a creative and user-oriented colleague for the position of Humanities and Social Sciences Librarian, with primary responsibility for services to the Department of English and the Department of Media, Journalism, and Film. The librarian engages with colleagues and the academic community to plan and provide high quality services in information consultation, student learning and literacies, and collection management. The position reports to the Head of the Advise & Instruct department.
The successful applicant will play a critical role in developing and contributing to contemporary, cross-departmental library initiatives, including possible roles in emerging technologies; digital humanities; scholarly communications and open educational resource advocacy; education and outreach initiatives; developing and teaching coursework and workshops for the library system; developing and managing library services and products; and/or providing requested policy and practice recommendations for Libraries administration. The position requires a self-motivated, creative, client-centered librarian who is committed to providing excellent customer service and who remains knowledgeable of emerging trends in libraries, information technology, and needs of the subject areas served.
Responsibilities include: Serve as the library subject specialist and liaison to the Department of English and Department of Media, Journalism, & Film (additional cognate subject area may also be assigned, depending on the appointee’s experience, interests, and library needs); establish and maintain positive relationships with faculty and students in assigned liaison areas, and monitor changing needs and trends; provide specialized information consultation in assigned subject areas and support the Libraries’ public service points; provide engaged library instruction in multiple modes as warranted to support curricula and research in assigned areas; provide collection development and management in assigned areas, inclusive of the Libraries’ substantial English language literature, poetry, and fiction collections; cooperate with colleagues to support and assist in library services across the system and university.
Require: Graduate library degree from an ALA-accredited institution by date of appointment; undergraduate degree in English, communications, journalism, or media studies; teaching skills leading to proficient instruction in information literacy; strong commitment to high quality public service; analytical skills to aid in use of information sources and in technology problem solving; strong written and oral communication skills; ability to work both in teams and independently with all levels of staff and diverse library customers; professional flexibility; proactive attitude, initiative, and ability to independently conceive and carry out projects; enthusiasm and capability to independently identify and develop skills in professional competencies; ability to meet the Libraries’ promotion and continuing contract requirements http://www.lib.muohio.edu/about/larps.pdf.
Desire: advanced degree in English, communications, journalism, or media studies; prior work experience in an academic library; prior work experience in public-facing or client service-oriented work environments; experience teaching at the collegiate level; prior experience working with digital humanities scholarship, emerging technologies, or scholarly communications issues.
