Job Summary

The Editorial Director is responsible for the editorial strategy and oversight, development and production of all copy and content appearing in print, digital and broadcast media for editorial and marketing purposes. This is a Professional Exempt Contractual (PEC) position for which an annual contract reflecting the base salary within the fiscal year (July 1st to June 30th) will be issued after ratification by Miami Dade College's District Board of Trustees.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Organizes, supervises and participates in the management and development of all copy
  • Plans and develops story and content ideas, as well as story budgets and production schedules
  • Writes and edits, and proofs the text for a variety of media
  • Works with editors and writers on editorial calendars, as wells as story research, development and submissions
  • Establishes editorial policy and ensures that high standards for peer review processes, copy editing, and production are met
  • Ensures adherence to production schedules
  • Supervises full-time and freelance writers
  • Collaborates with college clientele and works with colleagues in the Office of Communications, including the design staff and interdepartmental writers, to produce marketing deliverables
  • Participates in brainstorming and research sessions to contribute to a creative interpretation of copywriting and editorial content
  • Prepares budgetary recommendations, monitors, verifies and reconciles expenditure of budgeted funds
  • Continuously searches for new efficiencies and quality improvement
  • Routinely recommends for new creative approached to writing and content
  • Participates in educational publishing industry events and associations
  • Performs other related duties as assigned

Minimum Requirements

  • Master's degree (MA or MS) form an accredited college/university in a related field of study such as Journalism or Communications and three (3) years of directly related editorial experience or Bachelor's degree from an accredited college/university and seven (7) years of directly related editorial experience
  • All educational degrees must be from a regionally accredited institution
  • Knowledge and understanding of College organization, goals and objectives, and policies and procedures
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with thorough understanding of style standards
  • Knowledge and commitment to the college mission
  • Knowledge of current technical developments/trends in area of expertise
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Knowledge of PC and MAC applications related to design and publishing, and solid research skills
  • Excellent computer skills; knowledge of publishing processes and techniques
  • Highly developed interpersonal and diplomatic skills and the ability to effectively communicate with a wide range of individuals and constituencies in a diverse community
  • Possess excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to deal credibly and effectively with senior institutional leadership
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment in decision-making
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from top management, groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports and legal documents
  • Ability to carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the College's policies and applicable laws, including: interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems
  • Ability to give and receive constructive feedback
  • Ability to work effectively with user communities of diverse backgrounds and skill levels
  • Ability to work in a multi-ethnic and multi-cultural environment with students, faculty, and staff
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule that may include evening and weekend assignments
