Job Summary

The Department Chairperson provides academic leadership, serves as an integral member of the College and Campus administrative teams, and works closely with Academic Deans, Associate Deans, Cluster Directors and Campus Presidents. This individual is responsible for managing programs in Film and Television Production, Photography, Computer Animation, Technical Theater which are offered on several Campuses. The Chairperson oversees the integration of the academic production programs with the College's television network, MDC-TV. This is a Professional Exempt Contractual (PEC) position for which an annual contract reflecting the base salary within the fiscal year (July 1st to June 30th) will be issued after ratification by Miami Dade College's District Board of Trustees.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Supervises the development and/or revision of curricula
  • Develops course schedules and faculty assignments
  • Teaches at least one 3-credit course within the discipline per academic year
  • Hires, supervises and evaluates personnel
  • Hires adjunct faculty
  • Implements instructional programs
  • Prepares and maintains budget, labs and equipment
  • Develops collaboration among disciplines within the department and among various departments including the operation of the College's television network, MDC-TV
  • Ensures the effective implementation of the faculty advancement processes
  • Provides program information and ensures the availability of advisement services for students
  • Serves on Campus and college-wide committees
  • Participates in the development and implementation of College policies, procedures and guidelines
  • Resolves issues and problems that may arise with faculty, staff and students
  • Provides training opportunities for employees
  • Performs other duties as required

Minimum Requirements

  • Master's degree in Fine Arts, Film and/or Television Production, Animation, Photography, Technical Theatre, or Mass Communications with a specialty related to the film and television industry with five (5) years of sufficient combined experience in education to effectively manage the department
  • Three (3) years of experience in the television industry
  • Knowledge and understanding of the day-to-day operations of a broadcast cable television network including all facets of production, post-production, on-air scheduling and programming
  • Knowledge and understanding of cable broadcast television and film industries including independent production
  • Ability to evaluate and refine media management and operational methods of a cable TV broadcast network
  • Ability to demonstrate knowledge of the broadcast and film industries, expertise in post-production studio procedures, and understanding of the requirements of accreditation agencies (i.e. SACS)
  • Knowledge and understanding of College organization, goals and objectives, and policies and procedures
  • Knowledge and understanding of a wide range of instructional systems development, training methods
  • Skill in computer applications, budget preparation. and management
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents
  • Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format
  • Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community
  • Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions
  • Ability to supervise and train assigned staff including organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments
  • Ability to work in a multi-ethnic and multi-cultural environment with students, faculty, and staff
