Engineering and Computer Science Faculty

Engineering and Computer Science Faculty

Job: IRC24200

The Shiley-Marcos School of Engineering at the University of San Diego (USD) invites applications for a cluster of faculty positions in engineering and computer science related to design thinking. We are particularly interested in the application of design thinking to the fields of intelligent systems, computational biology, software engineering or healthcare including bioengineering.

We endeavor to build a cohort of teacher-scholars who will advance the reputation of USD in the areas of design, intelligent systems, healthcare and related engineering and computing practice. It is anticipated that these faculty members will work within engineering and across campus to build faculty/student collaborations and promote interdisciplinary strength related to design thinking. They will also create and develop courses that provide students with opportunities to practice authentic design including developing empathy, identifying user needs, defining design challenges, ideating, prototyping, implementation, and testing.

USD provides a high quality undergraduate education by emphasizing small classes and a high level of faculty-student interaction. The Shiley-Marcos School of Engineering has recently ranked among the top 15 programs at non-Ph.D. granting institutions by U.S. News and World Report. The school currently houses undergraduate engineering programs in electrical engineering, general engineering (with developing focus areas in embedded software engineering, environmental engineering, and bioengineering), industrial & systems engineering, and mechanical engineering. The school also offers a bachelor's degree in computer science and an MS degree in cyber security engineering. Candidates should have technical expertise in a disciplinary area associated with the degrees offered.

We have a preference for hiring at the assistant professor level, although other academic ranks, including professors of practice, will be considered. We anticipate that these positions will start in the fall of 2018.

The successful candidates will:
• hold a Ph.D. in engineering, engineering education, computing, or a related discipline,
• have demonstrated a commitment to teaching and research, and mentoring undergraduates,
• have demonstrated ability to mentor student design experiences in their discipline.

USD, an independent Catholic university, is an Equal Opportunity Employer committed to achieving excellence, diversity and inclusion in its faculty, students and environment.
