I. DEPARTMENT INFORMATION

Job Description Summary:

We are seeking a Laboratory Technician in microscopy to join the George Washington University Nanofabrication and Imaging Center (GWNIC) staff on the Foggy Bottom campus in Washington DC. Duties will include preparation and imaging of biological and materials samples for microscopy from our research labs. Additional duties will include general laboratory management. This is a support position in the GWNIC, for all of the departments of the University and outside users, where we provide high quality microscopy services.

Specific duties include:
-Provides lab support by performing LM and EM biological and materials sample preparation (fixation, embedding, sectioning, staining, dehydration, drying, coating, etc.). Operates LM, FM, TEM, and SEM to produce high quality digital images of client samples. Prepares solutions and materials for experimental plans and executes on appropriate timeline.
- Participates with on-going projects to prepare samples and collect images for figures for grants and publications. Makes detailed observations during protocols. Prepares literature reviews.
-Assists clients on general lab equipment operation. Assists clients on sample preparation protocols.
-Monitors compliance with University and OSHA safety requirements. Maintains the laboratory in an organized, clean manner; stocks supplies; makes solutions; disposes of chemical waste; etc.
-Performs other work related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.

Minimum Qualifications:

High school diploma/GED, or equivalent combination of training and experience, is necessary plus 1.5 years of relevant experience, or a bachelor’s degree.

Additional Required Licenses/Certifications/Posting Specific Minimum Qualifications: Preferred Qualifications:

-Familiarity in ultrathin sectioning of resin embedded samples on the ultramicrotome.
-Fundamental knowledge of the operating characteristics of light microscopes, electron microscopes, and vacuum systems.
-Operational knowledge of the basic sample preparation instrumentation (i.e. ultramicrotome, sputter coater, critical point dryer, glass knife breaker, etc.) for a microscopy laboratory.
-Excellent interpersonal skills for working with a large, diverse university community, and strong oral/written communication skills as well as computer literacy skills (to include word processing, spreadsheets, databases and presentation software knowledge).
-Time management and organizational skills are a preferred to work efficiently and productively in a fast paced environment.
