Required Qualifications: As per Civil Service standards and specifications. There are no minimum education or experience qualifications for appointment to this title. Must comply with all DLAR policies and procedures. Able to work weekends and holidays. Ability to read simple treatment instructions.

Preferred Qualifications: Experience performing animal husbandry duties in a commercial or research setting.

Brief Description of Duties: The Animal Laboratory Caretaker will take care of Lab animals in order to help research work. Duties to include the following:

  • Cleaning, changing cages, bottles, scrubbing pens, feed/water animals, observe/report sick/dead/injured animals; sweep, mop, house and squeegee rooms;
  • Sanitize and buff rooms
  • Insure cage cards are filled out properly
  • Take daily census of animal population and fill out prescribed forms
  • Operate automatic cage washers
  • Take garbage out
  • Wash laundry
  • Pair groups of animals for mating under supervision
  • Other duties as assigned

Special Notes: This is a full-time position, 40 hours per week, days varied, shift hours 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. FLSA Nonexempt position, eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Internal and external search to occur simultaneously. Mandatory rehire roster candidates have preference.

The selected candidate must successfully clear a background investigation.

Positions that are designated as such are required to report to work/remain at work even if classes are cancelled, and the campus is working on limited operations in an emergency.
