Position Description

Advertised Job Summary

The Communications Manager serves as the principal communicator for the University of South Carolina College of Pharmacy, working at the direction of the Dean of the College of Pharmacy while reporting into the health sciences brand team within the Office of Communications & Public Affairs.
The incumbent will execute the integrated communications strategy for the College of Pharmacy, helping achieve its objectives through communications to alumni, students, faculty, partners and prospective students. They will create content that builds awareness of, drives engagement with and enhances the reputation of the College of Pharmacy by relying on their expertise in written and visual communication in print, on the web, through social media and by attaining coverage in earned media.
The Communications Manager will work independently on projects prioritized by the College and will collaborate with colleagues throughout the Office of Communications & Public Affairs on projects that are deemed shared priorities of the College and the University. They will be responsible for ensuring that the story of the College is told in an engaging way to enhance its reputation for academic and research excellence.

Minimum Qualifications (Classified and Unclassified positions)

Master's degree and 2 years professional experience related to the development and dissemination of informational material, or Bachelor's degree and 4 years related experience.

Two years of experience in communications, marketing or public relations role or other relevant professional experience in communications.

Preferred Qualifications

Five years of professional experience in a client facing content strategy, marketing or public relations role.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

The Communications Manager is an organized, enterprising self-starter with executive presence and a proven ability to create engaging content across all media. A track record of successfully pitching stories to external media is preferred. Must demonstrate proficiency in content management software, social media platforms, web analytics and social media monitoring and be adaptable to new technology including production management and team collaboration software. Knowledge of AP style is required, along with the ability to be a self-editor.
Project management skills and a proven ability to meet tight deadlines are a must. Verbal communication skills and an open, collaborative approach are necessary for success in this role. The Communications Manager helps clients define problems first, then solve them through strategic thought and planning. A desire to develop professionally and keep abreast of developing trends in communications is required.
