Office of the Provost:  Coordinator, English Language Grammar and Editing Lab.

Reporting to the Director of the Howe Center for Writing Excellence, the Coordinator oversees and supervises the various services and programs of the English Language Grammar and Editing Lab, ensuring that it offers best practice and expert knowledge to empower multilingual undergraduate and graduate students to read, speak and write proficiently in the English language.  Specific responsibilities include:  Hire and train student tutors to work with ESL students; observe and evaluate student tutors; oversee scheduling of tutoring hours; develop and implement ongoing assessment of the lab for continuous improvement; write annual reports on usage and effectiveness; serve as a liaison between the Howe Writing Center and American Culture & English (ACE) Program, International Scholar & Student Services (ISSS), and the English ESL Composition Coordinator; coordinate the lab’s services and programs with other academic and writing support programs across the University; coordinate any special mentoring, conversation, or writing groups for international students (with Honors, ACE, English, and other interested programs); direct English Language Learners to other resources as needed; teach sprint or full-term reading, writing or speaking courses for multi-lingual learners.

 

 

 

Require: M.A. ESL/TESOL or related discipline (including but not limited to English, Composition and Rhetoric, or linguistics); knowledge of tutoring techniques, principles and practices; knowledge of best practices in writing instruction at the postsecondary level; knowledge of leadership, management and supervision principles and practices; strong interpersonal and communication skills; demonstrated organizational skills, attention to detail and high degree of openness to new ideas and approaches.  Desire:  PhD in ESL/TESOL, specifically with an emphasis in Rhetoric and Composition or related field with an emphasis in writing centers, basic writing, and/or working with diverse student populations; TESOL certification or other evidence of advanced study of working with multilingual learners; experience teaching composition, linguistics, and/or basic writing; experience as a writing center consultant and/or director; two years of progressively responsible instructional experience.
