The Assistant Director, Programs assists with the coordination and support of the programmatic, administrative, financial, and supervisory functions of University Student Union Programs Division. The incumbent plans the development and administration of Beach Pride Events, ASI Media (including radio, newspaper, and television), and assessment. The Assistant Director provides leadership in the development of student programs, events and activities both within the University Student Union, Student Recreation & Wellness Center, and throughout the University as required. Works closely with the CSULB Division of Student Affairs and other campus partners to ensure opportunities are provided for a shared co-curricular experience. The incumbent develops and implements a comprehensive assessment program for ASI incorporating its facilities, programs, and services; provides ongoing support for assessment activities throughout ASI; and analyzes and reports results to management, and student government. Serves as the ASI representative to the Division of Student Affairs Assessment Team.

 ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • As a member of the USU senior management team, meets regularly with other management personnel to establish and ensure effective on-going communication and coordination among departments. Assists managers with all aspects of program and service delivery and ensures departments’ adherence to the mission, goals, and policies of the Associated Students, Incorporated.
  • Oversees the development and management of social, cultural, recreational, co-curricular and developmental training programs and services including large scale concerts, movies, exhibits, lectures, workshops, presentations, etc. provided by Beach Pride Events. Oversees all aspects of planning, development, and management within ASI and USU programming and ASI student media (television, radio, newspaper). Ensures the design, establishment, and implementation of short and long range goals, objectives and operating procedures to ensure student development. Develops and implements a comprehensive corporate-wide assessment plan under the direction of the ASI Executive Director and Director, USU/SRWC. Creates expectations for consistent departmental assessment, coordinates the gathering, processing, and interpretation of results, and prepares reports to the ASI Executive Director on all corporate assessment efforts and outcomes. Through appropriate guidance and training of staff, ensures the proper management of student volunteers throughout the Programs Division, including volunteer recruitment, engagement, selection, assignment, and evaluation. Assesses the volunteer program to demonstrate evidence of volunteer retention, personal and professional development, and impact on career readiness. Oversees and assists with advisement of student staff in student media departments. Provides support and budgetary oversight of revenue generation in order to meet annual budget goals. Advises students regarding material that is potentially libelous, slanderous, obscene, or conducive to a material and substantial disruption of campus activities. Works collaboratively with the development of communications designed to keep the campus and general public informed of ASI’s programs, activities, and accomplishments. Collaborates with ASI Communications in preparation, graphic design, production, and final review of publications, newsletters, and digital media. Identifies and mitigates all risk exposure for ASI. Ensures that contracts for all programs and services adequately address all issues relative to the specific program.  Ensure that all projects meet organizational deadlines and documentation for contract execution, accounts payable, and audit compliance.
  • Directs the formulation and development of programming policies and procedures for activities held in the University Student Union, consistent with university regulations. Guides student and staff members in achieving problem-solving strategies related to policy, program, and administration. Evaluates practices and implements modifications.
  • Oversees the development, planning, and execution of Beach Pride Events and University-wide major special events and programs (including Homecoming, Concert, An Evening with…, Smorgasport, Beach Family Day, etc). Provides post-event reports, analyses, and regular status reports on programs. Serves on corporate wide and campus committees as needed.
  • Manages all department budgets and advises departments and Director on financial status. Reviews activity reports and financial statements to determine progress and status in attaining financial objectives, and revises plans in accordance with current conditions. Establishes and maintains effective communications and working relationships with USU Board of Trustees (USUBOT) and the ASI Media Board of Trustees (AMBOT). Works closely with USUBOT committee chairs and AMBOT Chair on annual strategic goals.


Directly supervises two (2) full-time employees in the Beach Pride Events and Media Coordination departments. Indirectly supervises one full time employees, 30+ part time employees, and 100+volunteers for the various areas within the Programs Division.  Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.


Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree (B.A.) or equivalent from a four-year college or university in educational psychology, recreation and leisure studies, business administration, or other job-related field; Master’s degree preferred; minimum four years directly-related professional work experience; experience supervising professional and support staff; and experience planning and implementing large-scale and high-profile events; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Knowledge and Abilities

Thorough knowledge of programming principles and practices, preferably in a college union or nonprofit organization setting; thorough knowledge of thorough knowledge of correct English, grammar, spelling and punctuation; general knowledge of methods and materials used in graphic design and electronic media production; strong communication skills and public speaking ability.
