Bachelor's Degree. Two (2) years of full time professional experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

One year of full time professional prospect research experience. Experience with prospect research software (i.e. Wealth Screenings, LexisNexis, WealthEngine, Hoover’s, etc.). Direct experience in fundraising operations. Working knowledge of Raiser’s Edge or similar relational database. Knowledge of ethics statements by APRA, Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE), and other related associations. Proficiency using Microsoft Excel data functions, i.e. pivot tables and formulas. Experience in a higher education or non-profit environment.

Brief Description of the Position:

The overall goal of the Prospect Research Analyst is to identify broad prospect pools, support program tactics for prospect identification, and provide research and analysis on individuals, corporations, and foundations. The Analyst will disseminate information on stakeholders, stakeholder groups and issues to maximize and leverage prospect research initiatives set by the Senior Director. Supports University Advancement’s annual goals and fundraising efforts by conducting prospect research utilizing publicly available information sources, as well as data provided through internal and external sources. Prepares comprehensive written analysis, biographical and financial prospect profiles, briefings on individuals, corporations and foundations, as well as to contribute to the school's intellectual capital on key business markets and issues. For success in this role, there is a need for effective analytical skills to initiate and perform complex analyses and organize information to identify philanthropic patterns, tendencies, and relationships among individuals, corporations and foundations. The selected candidate should also have the ability to recall, recognize and communicate interrelated information pertaining to University benefactors and prospects. Under the direction of the Senior Director, the Prospect Researcher Analyst will be responsible for the following:

Prospect research and data analysis:

- Identify, evaluate, and recommend current and potential major gift prospects.

- Analyze and synthesize accumulated information to assess financial capacity, philanthropic tendencies, giving propensity and linkages to campus.

- Utilizing ethical intelligence-gathering techniques of the information profession, provide high-level research on friends, alumni, corporations, and foundations using a wide variety of biographical, organizational and financial sources, including state-of-the-art online database services, Internet websites, library and government sources and other external repositories of public information.

- Compose documents (profiles, biographies, project summaries) using style, grammar and content appropriate to specific audiences. Interpret and translate complex financial, legal and corporate language into easily comprehensible terms while adhering to University standards of discretion and confidentiality. Extract and communicate key information which supports cultivation and solicitation strategies.

Prospect Research - Campaign Support:

- Proactively support the Development department and leadership team in fundraising initiatives by assisting in the identification and review of prospects needed for campaign and ongoing programmatic support.

- Assist with research, data mining and statistical analysis projects that help identify, classify and understand the University respective prospect pools.

- Respond to internal research requests in a timely manner, working independently to provide current information on known prospects and existing donors.

- Prepare reports tailored to the needs of the fundraisers, identifying and qualifying new donor prospects, analyzing high-level donors and prospects.

- Support pipeline building initiatives such as peer screenings and data mining.

Prospect Data Tracking and Integrity:

- Maintain a high level of data accuracy and integrity, ensuring all data elements are properly communicated and archived for future reporting and retrieval.

- Ensure all data is managed with the highest level of sensitivity, maintain information based on the policies and procedures of the Stony Brook Foundation and University.

- Ensure prospect knowledge, including ratings, interests and linkages acquired through research is preserved and maintained in database system that is accessible to campus wide fundraising staff and used to develop future cultivation strategies.

- Handles extremely sensitive information with confidentiality and tact.

- Maintain integrity, donor trust, and confidentiality at all times.

Support Prospect Research Methods and Practices:

- Review, maintain and stay informed about current research resources, technologies and tools.

- Stay informed of prospect research trends, advancements, and tools; make recommendations for advancement, processes, and methodologies.

- Work with and evaluate new and existing tools and programs to make sure each one is accurate, cost effective, and that the Stony Brook Foundation is getting the greatest possible value from it.

- Educate development staff and others involved in fundraising activities about current Research practices and trends.

Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission.
