Chair, Department of Psychiatry
Ross University School of Medicine (RUSM), one of the largest accredited medical schools training physicians in North America, is seeking a skilled clinical educator in psychiatry to serve as Chair of the Department of Psychiatry. The Chairperson provides guidance and oversight of an aligned, integrated, and uniform educational experience in psychiatry for medical students across 25 of clinical sites in USA. The Chairperson is the senior academic and administrative officer for clinical faculty in psychiatry distributed among more than 25 hospitals throughout the United States. The successful candidate is responsible for ensuring academic excellence and high student performance in psychiatry by driving instructional excellence among the psychiatry faculty at the clinical sites. The Chairperson is expected to establish, monitor, and as necessary refresh key performance indicators for students and faculty in psychiatry. The Chairperson will serves as the respected spokesperson for RUSM's Department of Psychiatry among internal and external stakeholders. Because this is a part time position, the successful candidate can work remotely.
Approval and Accreditation
Accreditation: RUSM is accredited by the Dominican Medical Board (DMB) and the Caribbean Accreditation Authority for Education in Medicine and Other Health Professions (CAAM-HP).
Title IV eligibility: The US Department of Education has certified RUSM as an eligible institution for Title IV Federal Direct Student Loans. Students who qualify are eligible to receive US student loans in order to attend RUSM.
State approvals: New Jersey, New York, California, and Florida uniquely require approval for international medical students to rotate at healthcare facilities in those states. RUSM is approved in each of these states.
International recognition: The World Health Organization (WHO) includes RUSM in it's listing of medical schools approved by recognized national authorities.
Technology distinction: The Simulation Institute on the Dominica campus earned accreditation from the Society for Simulation in Healthcare, an organization that seeks to improve performance and reduce errors in patient care through the use of simulation. Interprofessional simulation education is taught on the Miramar campus.

- Monitors and assures adherence with core curriculum requirements in Psychiatry at each clinical site so that a uniform student experience is achieved comparability.
Conducts site visits at least every 2 years to review the performance and student outcomes in Psychiatry at every core clinical sites.
Based on information gathered during site visits, provides timely summary reports and makes recommendations to the Clinical Sub Committee of the Curriculum Committee following the RUSM Clinical Site Visit report guidelines.
With the Clinical Sub Committee of the Curriculum Committee, provides feedback and recommendations for improvement to under-performing sites to correct deficiencies.
Works closely with the clerkship directors and the Directors of Medical Education at each site and other relevant clinical leaders to identify faculty for appointment in Psychiatry.
Provides content expertise in Psychiatry assessing new sites for possible clinical engagement with RUSM.
Participates in RUSM leadership and clinical faculty development programs.
Assesses and makes recommendations to the Clinical Faculty Advancement and Promotions Committee regarding faculty rank / promotions.
At the behest of the Clinical Sub Committee of the Curriculum Committee, establishes and updates instructional program goals and tactics in Psychiatry consistent with the discipline and other board standards.
Ensures the academic department is in compliance with current developments in medicine as they will be reflected in the USMLE Step 2 examinations.
Works within her/his discipline to help guarantee the highest possible performance by RUSM students on Step 2 USMLE.
Serves on appropriate bodies to assure accreditations are maintained.
Participates in program evaluations and assessments to assure appropriate outcomes are achieved for the specialty.
Leads on career and residency match advising within his/her specialty.
Reaches out to and counsels students in academic difficulty (e.g. those who have failed the core clerkship NBME examination).
Remains current on developments in the field, research, and best practices. Researches emerging industry trends, new technologies, concepts and techniques and works with the appropriate personnel to integrate these items into the department goals.
Promotes the use of technology, including the effective application and review the on-line clinical curriculum, throughout the clinical rotations.
Completes other projects and duties as assigned.
Maintain active medical license and board certification in psychiatry
- M.D. or equivalent terminal medical degree from an accredited US, Canadian, or UK school of medicine
Active license to practice Psychiatry in the US, Canada, or UK
Active Board certification in Psychiatry
Minimum of ten years of experience teaching medical students and /or residents in Psychiatry
Demonstrated record of achievement in medical administration within a hospital, clinic, medical school, clinical practice, or health setting
Experience advising students for the NRMP match preferred
Knowledge of contemporary advances and clinical issues in psychiatry
Eligible for rank of Professor at RUSM
Able to meet domestic and international requirements for travel
