Official Title of Position:         Chief Academic Affairs Officer

Position Duties/Responsibilities:

The Chief Academic Affairs Officer is responsible for the overall vision, direction, and operation of the academic unit of the college and assumes the overall responsibilities of the college in the absence of the president.  The CAO provides leadership in the academic planning, management and development of innovative and highest quality credit programs, as well as fiscal accountability and supervision of faculty and support staff.

1.  Leadership

  • To provide leadership to the academic unit consistent with the mission of the college.
  • To provide leadership and direction in all areas related to instruction and student learning.
  • To provide leadership in concert with other KCTCS institutions and the KCTCS Chancellor to enhance academic initiatives.
  • To participate in professional organizations and professional development opportunities.

2.  Communication

  • To maintain effective communication in the academic arena among all units of the local college, KCTCS, other educational institutions, and the community at large.
  • To maintain open communication channels with the leaders in the academic unit (e.g., convene regular meetings with division chairpersons and other academic personnel).

3.  Faculty

  • To be responsible, with the faculty and division chairpersons, for the recruitment and retention of full-time, part-time, and volunteer faculty, as well as staff personnel supporting the instructional unit.
  • To promote the professional development of faculty.
  • To coordinate with the president and division chairpersons the development of the faculty PPE.
  • To work with the president, division chairpersons, and academic leadership to facilitate the faculty promotion (rank) and tenure when applicable.

4.  Students

  • To facilitate effective academic processes and procedures that foster student success.

5.  Instructional Programs

  • To be responsible for the development, implementation, and evaluation of academic and/or instruction programs.
  • To be responsible, with the division chairpersons, for the preparation and evaluation of the schedule of classes.
  • To facilitate and participate in the evaluation processes related to academic affairs program and personnel.
  • To ensure that institutional effectiveness efforts are implemented throughout the academic affairs unit.
  • To provide leadership for academic support and academic services as defined by the college (support services include library, extended campus sites, learning resource centers, development programs, and community education/community service).

6.  Budget

  • To formulate and implement an annual budget related to the goals and operational needs of the academic affairs unit.
  • To provide leadership in the development of grant proposals as applicable.

7.  Administrative

  • To provide leadership in strategic academic planning and to prepare institutional reports as requested by internal and external sources.
  • To develop plans to achieve college targets and strategic plans.
  • To ensure compliance with KCTCS and local college policies and procedures.
  • To provide leadership in accountability and institutional effectiveness.
  • To assume other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the president.

Position Requirements: 

  1. Earned doctoral degree from an accredited institution.
  2. Record of successful experience as a college instructor and/or administrator with five years’ college administrative position experience.
  3. Experience or background in curriculum revision and program development.
  4. Experience with workforce education and technical training.
  5. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with others, as well as promote cultural and global diversity awareness.
  6. Demonstrated use of data in decision-making.
  7. Demonstrated commitment to the mission of the comprehensive community college.
  8. Demonstrated commitment to team leadership and ability to work effectively as a member of the leadership team.
  9. Demonstrated commitment to quality instruction and student learning.
  10. Demonstrated commitment to across the curriculum competencies of writing, reading, creative thinking, ethics/values, and integrated learning.
