The Virginia Community College System invites applications and nominations for the presidency of Lord Fairfax Community College (LFCC). As a part of Virginia's Community Colleges, LFCC is a comprehensive community college providing high quality, accessible, and affordable educational opportunities for the residents of a 2,561-square-mile service region, which includes Clarke, Fauquier, Frederick, Page, Rappahannock, Shenandoah, and Warren counties and the City of Winchester.

Founded in 1970, LFCC boasts an annualized enrollment of over 9,000 students in credit courses with an annualized full-time equivalency of 3,909 students, and conferred over 1,700 certificates, diplomas, and degrees to graduating students in Spring 2017. For the sixth straight year, LFCC has been named a Great College to Work For® by The Chronicle of Higher Education. This also marks LFCC's fifth time as an “Honor Roll” institution. LFCC is an attractive and invaluable resource for the community it serves because its full-time tuition is a third of the public senior colleges and universities in the region; it is the region's primary resource for workforce development and continuing education, and it holds Guaranteed Admissions Agreements with over 30 senior institutions throughout Virginia.

Success Factors

The Local College Board and college community have identified several areas of potential emphasis or growth for the next leader, including:

  • Programs: Plan and implement both credit and non-credit curricula to meet the needs of students, businesses and industries in our community.
  • Access: Strengthen and expand educational access by continuing strong partnerships with high schools, marketing LFCC to prospective students, and reducing barriers to continuing education.
  • Student Support: Increase personalized support for student success and credential attainment
  • Community: Promote and advance greater engagement with entire community and region.
  • Organizational Improvement: Enhance continuous organizational improvement to meet the unique needs of LFCC.

The next president will be a skilled strategist able to envision, propose, and implement change with a proven record of engaging the college, community, and other external partners in improving student access and success. The president will develop and maintain strong leadership teams; seek continuous improvement; and foster positive change. This leader will build successful partnerships with highly diverse stakeholders and advance fundraising efforts. Internally, she/he will ensure operational efficiency, fiscal strength, and college affordability, while building sustainability of programs to meet the needs of the students and community at large. An understanding of the mission and goals of a comprehensive community college in the 21st Century are essential characteristics.

Qualifications for President

To accomplish the above, qualified candidates must have an earned doctorate and demonstrated successful senior executive experience at the highest levels. Previous experience must include significant responsibility for programs, budgets, personnel, facilities and other appropriate administrative duties. The ideal candidate will have proven leadership abilities along with excellent communications skills, a strong belief in a collaborative administrative style, as well as, a servant leadership perspective. She/he must also have a broad vision for the College along with the skills and energy for implementation. Demonstrated ability to work with business, industry, government and the community at large is required.
