Tree Specialist Series
This series of job classifications includes positions in which the major duties involve maintaining good health and appearance in mature trees on the campus. This involves climbing, pruning, removing dead limbs, treating for diseases and pests, as well as additional similar duties as required. There are four levels in the series, Tree Specialist I, II, II Leader and III. They are differentiated on the basis of degree of independence and complexity of duties. The duties listed under the Characteristic Duties sections are designed to provide a representative sampling of key tasks and/or responsibilities associated with the jobs. They are not intended to be a complete list of all the duties performed by employees in the classification. Tree Specialist II JC 8098/Range A26
In addition to the duties performed by Tree Specialist I's, employees at this level work under general supervision and perform tree specialist duties of moderate complexity. These employees maintain acceptable physical appearance and healthy condition of mature trees on campus. Most work is performed independently. The supervisor rarely provides consultation and guidance, and then only in solving the most difficult tree problems, such as new or uncommon diseases. The supervisor will determine the priorities of jobs in most cases. In leading assistants, Tree Specialist II's instruct and provide close guidance throughout an operation. They insure that assistants learn and follow all necessary safety procedures. Characteristic Duties: Diagnose all common diseases, pests and other problems in trees; decides or recommends care and treatment Remove parts of trees or whole trees Perform or oversee spray treatment for diseased or pest-infested trees; prepare and use sprays and advise and instruct others in spraying Suggest replacement of trees Is alert for early indications of tree problems and communicates concern to lead or supervisor Keep up-to-date in knowledge of new chemicals and other treatment methods, of new diseases, insects, and other tree problems appearing on the campus and their treatment, of local and state regulations regarding use of sprays Prune and perform other operations as necessary to maintain good physical appearance and continued growth of trees Use a variety of hand and power tools and equipment; choose appropriate tools and equipment for each job May oversee the work of other employees assigned to assist; may guide employees Oversee limb and stump chipping. Qualifications: In addition to the qualifications listed for Tree Specialist I, the II level requires the following demonstrated qualifications: Must have Tree Worker Certification or equivalent experience Certified Arborist preferred Must possess and maintain a valid California driver's license Must be proficient in setting up high-work apparatus Must be proficient in all the skills of tree working, such as pruning, limb removing, and similar typical duties Must be proficient in the use of all hand and power tools required, including when working at heights to about 75 feet and from a variety of apparatus, such as ropes, and boom lift trucks Must be able to recognize and diagnose all tree problems common on the campus Must have a practical knowledge of the growth characteristics and requirements of the trees on campus Must be able to understand and follow verbal and written instructions given in English; must be able to communicate verbal instructions to assistants Must know the safety procedures required in the work, including what particular apparatus and methods should be used for a given job Must have approximately two years experience in work involving groundskeeping, grounds equipment operations, or related work, including experience performing Tree Specialist I duties.
