Georgia State University Library seeks an innovative, collegial, and highly-engaged information specialist to support research and teaching within the School of Public Health and health-related disciplines at Georgia State University. This position works to enhance collaborative research and team science in critical areas of public health, including biostatistics and epidemiology, health promotion and behavior, health management and policy, environmental health, and urban and global health. The Health Informationist provides regular consultations, research assistance, instruction in information and data use, and has a strong commitment to student learning and success at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Based within the downtown Library’s Research Data Services Team, (http://research.library.gsu.edu/dataservices) this position serves as liaison librarian and content specialist for the School of Public Health and other areas as assigned.
The Health Informationist is a new type of embedded specialist who works to link library resources and expertise with grant-funded research projects. Granting agencies such as the NIH/National Library of Medicine provide administrative supplements for informationists in order to enhance storage, organization, management, and use of digital research data, and the successful candidate is expected to explore opportunities in these areas. The successful candidate is well versed in the research lifecycle, with an understanding of the processes of conducting systematic literature reviews; analyzing, organizing, and preparing original data; and presenting research findings and raw data for publication and reuse. This involves, but is not limited to identifying and employing appropriate data standards, assigning metadata, recommending strategies for data curation, information retrieval and visualization, and tracking the output and impact of published research. In addition, the successful candidate maintains an awareness of federal agency requirements (specifically NIH) regarding data management, as well as the broader scholarly communication and curation issues associated with e-science and open data initiatives. The successful candidate serves as a member of the library faculty (non-tenure track), holds faculty rank, and is expected to engage in service and scholarly activities as outlined in the University Library’s faculty guidelines.
- ALA-accredited Master’s in Library/Information Science and/or relevant graduate degree in a related field
- Knowledge of the latest computational and statistical methods used in public health or health-related research
- Awareness of the research lifecycle, with an understanding of the processes of conducting extensive literature reviews; analyzing, organizing, and preparing research data; and presenting research findings and raw data for publication and reuse
- Ability to work collegially, cooperatively, and independently with varied groups in a complex organization and function collaboratively in a rapidly-changing team environment
- Understanding of the changing role of the academic library in higher education
- Excellent technology skills and ability to learn new ones quickly
- Effective oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills
- Ability to pass a background check
- Experience with the following: R/RStudio, STATA, SAS, SPSS, Mplus
- Experience with ArcGIS desktop; familiarity with geocoding, aggregation, and analysis of health data
- Knowledge of common metadata schema used in health fields
- Experience working in an academic or special library
- Teaching experience or experience leading group workshops
- Grant writing experience
Salary and Rank
Minimum salary of $50,000 - $60,000 for 12 months commensurate with the candidate’s education and experience. Appointment at a faculty rank [Instructor/Assistant/Associate Professor], on a contract renewal basis.
