The Foothill-De Anza Community College District is currently accepting applications for the classified position above.

Under the direction of the Dean, Biological and Health Sciences, with minimum supervision, prepare requested material for laboratory instruction in courses, including but not limited to General Biology, Botany, Cell Biology, Ecology/ Environmental Science, Human Anatomy/Physiology, Marine Biology and Microbiology. Set up regular communication with Biology faculty regarding their lab needs for each quarter. Assemble materials and set up demonstrations in a timely manner for scheduled lab courses. Compute, check, measure and weight materials and solutions used by the department. Operate and maintain laboratory equipment; perform minor repairs to lab and field equipment, especially minor repairs and realignment of microscopes. Maintain instructional microbial cultures. Inventory and order supplies utilizing college credit card; keep all receipts and invoices and turn in as appropriate to ensure prompt payment. Monitor and track all lab expenses in an organized spreadsheet including budget codes and source of funding. For certain perishable items, pick up as appropriate at local supermarkets per direction of Biology faculty. Maintain cleanliness in all lab areas. Maintain records and inventory on equipment, as well as supplies and maintenance schedules for equipment. Submit purchase requisitions as needed for regular maintenance of equipment and general ordering. Prepare, dispense and/or store supplies, media and chemicals in the proper manner. Ensure proper compliance and maintain all records as required understanding federal and state hazardous materials laws, workplace safety and CAL/OSHA requirements (e.g. biohazards, hazardous materials and sharps). Remediate all deficiencies noted on inspections promptly and interact effectively with FHDA district HazMat employees. Coordinate coverage between upper and lower campus laboratory space. Work effectively and collaboratively with part time lab technician. Learn to drive the Division cart and work cooperatively with Division Administrative Assistant to ensure compliance with all college safety rules on use. Perform a variety of clerical duties and other related tasks as required and requested by Dean. Post notices on classroom doors when faculty are unable to attend class. Periodically support Pharmacy Technology Department as requested by program director. Keep regular business hours.

Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, perform a variety of duties in support of an assigned laboratory; order, receive, store, maintain, and issue laboratory supplies and equipment.

Depending upon assignment, duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  1. Assist students with utilizing lab instruments, materials, and equipment in a safe and proper manner; answer technical questions; tutor students in assigned lab as necessary; demonstrate proper use of equipment and materials.
  2. Prepare and set up tools, equipment and materials for demonstrations, experiments, or instruction for the assigned lab; inspect lab for safety hazards and make corrections as necessary; demonstrate safety procedures as necessary.
  3. Order, issue and inventory supplies and equipment; assure the safe and proper storage of supplies, materials and equipment.
  4. Prepare and maintain a variety of records related to assigned laboratory duties.
  5. Operate a variety of assigned laboratory equipment specific to the assignment; perform minor repairs as needed.
  6. Perform administrative duties as assigned; monitor assigned budget expenditures.
  7. Communicate with other departments to exchange information and provide technical support as necessary; monitor the progress of students and discuss with faculty as needed.
  8. Attend various meetings as required.
  9. Perform a variety of clerical duties related to the assigned instructional laboratory.
  10. Monitor and provide direction to student assistants as assigned.
  11. Perform related duties as assigned.

  2. Any combination equivalent to an Associate's degree in an assigned area of expertise, or related field AND three (3) years related instructional laboratory experience.
