I. JOB OVERVIEW

Job Description Summary:

The Division of External Relations is seeking a Sound Engineer, Assistant Technical Director. The division combines the communications, government relations, marketing and creative services and events functions of the university. This position will report to the Production Manager.

Responsibilities include:
Maintains sound system equipment; reports condition and maintenance situations directly to the Production Manager/Technical Director. Works with/provides input to the Production Manager/Technical Director regarding the budget requirements for sound system maintenance and upgrades.

Develops and maintains a computerized tracking system for sound bids given to clients, sound rental costs incurred, additional sound personnel hired for an event, and inventory and maintenance records of in-house sound equipment.

Reads and adapts sound plots and requirements as specified in technical riders in consultation with Production Manager/Technical Director. Solicits bids and quotes from contractors as necessary.

Serves as primary sound engineer, responsible for overseeing the coordination of sound requirements for events, advancing sound requirements with clients and Production Manager/Technical Director and providing such service in a safe, customer service-oriented manner. In addition, trains and assists stage crew in the operation and maintenance of house systems, with the intention of developing assistant engineers capable of working on a rotational basis.

Serves in the role of acting production manager on a rotational, as needed basis. Will be expected to assist and perform with electric and carpentry crews as needed.

Researches and reports information about innovations in technical sound system industry standards and advises senior staff/management on sound system upgrades.

Assists the Production Manager/Technical Director in the set-up and staging of events to include load-in and load-out of events. Assists with the maintenance of, and reports on the status of, stage equipment. Reads and drafts lighting and scenic design plots and ensures the safe and successful implementation of such in accordance with clients' needs; oversees the restoration of the stage to basic hanging schedule of lights and drapery.

Performs other work related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.

Minimum Qualifications:

Qualified candidates will hold a high school diploma/GED plus 3 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Bachelor's degree or higher in a relevant area of study. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Additional Required Licenses/Certifications/Posting Specific Minimum Qualifications: Preferred Qualifications:

Proficiency with computers and computerized equipment.

Experience in a university setting is preferred.
