Position Summary

Responsible for program planning and day-to-day operations of music education activities at the MSU Community Music School - Detroit.  Must have experience and passion for music education, community outreach, administrative work and customer/constituent relations.  Availability on evenings and/or Saturdays.  Flexible scheduling is accommodated.

Responsibilities may include:

  • Provide input on programming, outreach, operations and strategic planning
  • Develop programs based on needs of community, and assess for effectiveness
  • Register students and process documents and payments; maintain student and project files
  • Help develop marketing plans and recruit students; create email and social media communications
  • Ensure accuracy of website and compliance with MSU standards
  • Represent CMS-D in the community (at schools, meetings, develop partnerships and lead presentations)
  • Manage instrument loans and supplies inventory, including checking out loaner instruments
  • Track condition and movement of equipment
  • Manage class and event schedules and calendars, classrooms and faculty needs
  • Manage student recitals
  • Set up and tear down for events (seating, instruments, equipment, etc.)
  • Liaison with facilities staff
  • Maintain policies, handbooks, course and curriculum guides, and registration materials
  • Manage student and parent surveys
  • Recruit and manage volunteers and guest speakers
  • Process financial aid and manage accounts receivables
  • Follows up on absent students
  • Monitors and orders supplies; processes payroll
  • Create reports from SSP (financial, student attendance, statistical, etc.)
  • If applicable, teach classes or serve as a substitute for other faculty
Required Degree

Bachelors -Music

Minimum Requirements

A bachelor's in music. One to three years' experience in music education; excellent interpersonal communication skills, both written and oral; commitment to student and community musical success; superior organizational skills; ability to multitask, change gears quickly and work with frequent interruptions; ability to contribute leadership ideas in support of the overall vision and mission of the school.

Desired Qualifications

Extensive musical knowledge and experience.  Expertise in Word, Excel, desktop publishing.
