Assistant Dean for Campus Life

The Assistant Dean for Campus Life provides leadership and direction and serves as the director for residence life, housing operations, commuter student services and community standards programs.
This role ensures a high-quality, holistic and educational experience for those students residing in Emerson College residence halls. Their work will be innovative and grounded in best practice and current national trends and themes. Primary areas of responsibility include:
(1) Providing strong management of community development within the residence halls.
(2) Strategic facility and occupancy management and ongoing development of a community standards program that intentionally supports the institutional and divisional mission.
Reporting to the Associate Dean for Campus Life, the Assistant Dean and staff will work collaboratively and positively with other key areas of the division and institution to create a caring approach to developing relationships with students and creating positive support networks for students. The Assistant Dean and staff will develop and implement policies, procedures, and programmatic innovations to create a vibrant, inclusive and welcoming campus community.

Campus Location: Boston Campus

Required Knowledge:
Minimum seven years of progressive experience in student affairs. Prior experience working in residence life, housing operations, community standards or related areas.

Preferred/Desirable Knowledge:
Experience with Maxient and StarRez preferred Masters degree in student affairs or related field

Job Duties:
  • Work closely with the Associate Dean for Campus Life to develop, prepare and evaluate the residential and housing operations program which will increase to over 2,600 beds upon completion of significant construction projects in fall 2019. This person serves as chief housing officer.
  • Develop practices and approaches to create a welcoming and caring sense of place within the residence halls and around campus where students can grow and develop during their time at Emerson.
  • Responsible for managing the community standards and student conduct process. Develop fair, and equitable programs for responding to violations of college policy. Develop programs to educate the campus about responsible and ethical behavior. The assistant dean should have a knowledge of current trends in student conduct and appropriate state and federal regulations. Serves as chief conduct officer.
  • Coordinate the sanction panel process for Title IX cases and works closely with the AVP for Title IX and Clery Compliance as well as assist the Emerson College Police Department in the maintenance of Clery Act violation records for campus.
  • Partner with appropriate college staff to support the overall residential student experience (Student Accessibility Services, Emerson Counseling and Psychological Services, Center for Health & Wellness, Title IX, Business Services, Violence Prevention and Response, Student Accounts, Emerson College PD, etc.).
  • Support the development of an active and engaged campus community by working closely with the Director of Student Engagement and Leadership.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Student Care and Support to help provide a strong sense of support and care for all students.
  • Supervise the Associate Director for residence life who is tasked to create a strong sense of community which fosters student growth and personal development. Additionally, the Assistant Dean will provide direction for the the Associate Director as the College continues to develop a robust and supportive living and learning environment when renovation is complete and a 1,036 bed facility opens in Fall 2019.
  • Supervise the Associate Director for Housing Operations and their team to ensure quality housing facilities and experiences as well as provide support for commuter students.
  • Supervise the Associate Director for Community Standards to develop and deliver a conduct process that is educational, fair and grounded in current practices which result in high levels of consistency of accountability.
  • Represent their areas on the Care, Assistance and Support Team (CAST).
  • Serves in the administrator on-call rotation.
